Building a Commercial Kitchen for the Community

It’s a new year, and as we celebrate our one-year anniversary of collectively owning the building, we have ambitious plans for improving the Commons to be as useful as possible to the amazing grassroots projects and rad organizations that share and steward the space.

That’s why we recently launched a crowdfunding campaign to build out the kitchen in Omni’s basement for use by Food Not Bombs, Phat Beets Produce, Counter Culture Labs, Bay Area Applied Mycology, The Village in Oakland #FeedThePeople, and the many others in the community in need of an affordable commercial kitchen.

Phase 1: Groundwork – Goal: $25,000

Our estimates for renovating the space total $75,000, so we’ve divided the fundraising efforts into three distinct phases. To get started, we need to raise a total of $25K, which will cover:

  • Architecture & structural engineering costs for planset production;
  • Building, trade, and health permits and inspection fees;
  • Demoing walls to build out an expanded area; and
  • Necessary plumbing upgrades such as installing a mop sink, grease traps, and floor drain.

Can you help us reach our goal by pitching in a few bucks today, sharing this email, and spreading the word?

We can’t wait to host you at the first community meal cooked in our new kitchen!

Gratitude and solidarity,
-your friends and comrades at the Omni Commons
