*Notes from OpAl:

** space for editing that is dedicated to editing at least half the week. small closed room. use it for meetings, editing workshops.
** Keep production gear in the stage room.
** Collaboration in terms of community media, have a common name and promote community media together.
** Two arts commissions in Oakland and we could submit proposal for grant money with Music is healing. We would need a business plan. Sarah Liz and Kwe are down to work on it. We could also ask Davida if she's down to participate since she was interested in grant writing. Food not bombs could be our fiscal sponsor.
** How do we pay rent? We're offering to steward the space and renovate it. It will bring people and cool projects. We could rent the room. Do a monthly meal to raise money. "dinner and a movie". Having a non compulsory membership. We could pay utilities but not rent.
** If we're going to look into utilizing the long basement room. What services we would want to put in that shared space. We could have a screening area for small screenings.
** Sound/silence: Reserving time slots.

1- A clear description of our vision
(for example) "A space dedicated to community media, that allows for people to tell their own stories or make their own media without depending on the institutions in power to get the resources they need. A space based on an idea of solidarity, resources, knowledge and skill sharing."

Bunker: Radio room and TV switching, editing room
Shake: All kinds of media, promoting each other's work
Christina: Preservation of analog film ideally. Participate publically as much as possible
Anka: Put all media creation in the same spot, but figure out if spacially we can co-exist
Kwe: Modular stations for all kinds of media creation, community radio station, music production and recording, emphasis on ability to rearrange the space according to people's needs. Averse to permanent walls
Tyler: Ability to support one another, free education
Brandon: Oakland Next's outreach program, music production. Fine with Blackhole's wall proposal
Sarah: Editing suite, ability to use sound recording rooms for ADR/foley.

==Rental==

* Liz has a question: integrating our rental system with Omni ballroom events that need gear.
** Liz: While working the TGIJPP fundraiser last weekend, they needed some lights, so I pulled out JC's kit. One of the bulbs was broken and there was a Britek light mistakenly packed in there. I opened the Britek kit and there were two DMX lights that don't even belong to OpAl. Rob said he thinks our kits got used for the cajun band but we have no idea who took them out. This is just a little concerning for me. I know sometimes sh!t happens and people need some lights (for example, the chandelier lights were out for the TGIJPP event), but one of the bulbs got broken and no one even left a note about it, and who knows if any small items got lost and I just didn't notice. There currently is no system for checking out ANY stage equipment (which may explain the loss of so many microphones), and any checkout system would necessarily have to include OpAl gear, unless we explicitly mark our gear off-limits. OpAl would be the best group to work with the Commons WG on a checkout system for stage and film gear, if we want to make OpAl gear available for ballroom events. I just want us to discuss this a bit so that we can be clear about in-house use of our equipment.
* Should omni use our equipment without being accountable for the equipment? We should have log in log out system
* Make sure we have people be accountable for the equipment if they damage it.
* Sarah: people should come to two meetings and be given a training and pay a deposit.
* Jabari: two meetings are two many.
* Sarah: ok so one meeting.
* Jabari: one member is there to make sure the equiment is used properly.
* Only the people who want to take our equipment off site should come to the meeting. For Omni use, talk to the commons wg and ask them to check in with us.
* Liz: We could get lock with the key so the kits are not available to random people. I'm also worried about people tripping and knocking the lights...

** The room would be open to reservations for people outside of OpAL to work on the monitors (any post production work on computers), from 9am to 3pm everyday. The rest of the time, priority to OpAl projects. Reservation possible on request. What about drop-ins? Sure

* Reconsider Google calendar - Is it going to work for us? If it allows to reserve the specific monitors (vs whole room), yes.

Context: We have a big responsibility. As one becomes an OpAl member, one becomes an Omni member. Now we all know eachother, we're all friends or friends of friends, but soon people we've never met will show up. We need a formal process to make sure the people we bring in are people we trust.

** Have new member show up at a meeting and introduce themselves: what they're interested in doing, etc.
** Have a one month period before making them members in which they participate in our activities, so that we can build a relationship with them.
** Make the new person a member after this one month if everyone is comfortable with it. That gives them access to the building (key) and OpAl equipment.

* Next Tuesday 19th: Film Night, final decisions for the selection. Customizing the award names and certificate to each film?
* Poster (deadline?) Sarah and the group is going to work on the poster this weekend.

Food: Sarah is going to do the cooking. She wants to charge ex[?] amount for food, she wants to know what everyone else thinks. She thinks her prices are reasonable. We are trying to work out where we are going to get our food at the best possible prices.

* OGC was called by Peace and Freedom party to do a forum on september 25th. We'll have various families talking about the specific situations. Followed by members of the OGC explain publically why we support to demand the slogan BLM and insist to follow with All Lives Matter. We're also going to roll out what is the program? That's what out program will be about. Saturday the 25th of July.

=Practices when working on projects=
* Proposal on creating precedents and learning from our experiences. If someone brings a project to OpAl:
** Gerald: we need a method to approach this work that is systematic. We need to be able to think and not take more work than we can do. Not do more than what we can do. Learn how to say no.
** Liz: lesson from the omni fundraising video: have clearly defined roles from the outset. I don't have a preference as in horizontal or hollywood style, but make sure we have clearly defined roles to avoid conflict.
** Anka: Making sure that the project is not too broad. When we started the gentrification project there was so much. We should narrow it down.
** Sarah: It would be necessary for a film maker with a project in mind to have a really clear time line for how long they want it to take. We should be clear about our boundaries as of the amount of time. Offer education too.
** Yousef: if we focus more on the projects that we wanna make rather than open the doors to projects. The projects that the members want to work on and make them a priority. IN regards to the equipment. It needs to be made more formal.Each and everyone who takes or rent the equipment needs to write. So everyone can be accountable.
** Noemie: two things - 1. It's really easy to gather people to film, but the editing process is long and hard and that's where projects tend to taper off and remain unfinished. So it's good to have people who are committed to editing and for them to be included in the filming process as well. 2. It is also easy for us to become overwhelmed with work; I think we will feel more committment to an outside project if we have some stakeholdership in the project and be included in decisionmaking and editing.
** Ala'a: we can have a person in charge of that. With a schedule. A scheduling for the equipment.
** Yousef: we should do an inventory for the equipment.

(* Members consent on whether the project is in line with the collective's mission. If not, limit the ways in which we collaborate. Up to anyone, but maybe possibility to block if it's really offensive to one member?
* Members work on it provided they have a real stakeholdership in the creative process, from the exploratory phase to the editing and publishing phase. (As opposed to providing free labor for a project where the decisions are taken without them).
* We must consent on the terms/organizational model of the project with the people bringing the project before we start: how can we make the project an opportunity for peer learning rather than specialization?

*Youth programs happening at the omni. They're asking if there are film making capacities.
Is there collective knowledge of this group.
*Gerald: I think that we are at a foundational stage of this collective. We are trying to develop the discipline. In this condition, I'd be happy if we were able to finish the work we've started.
*Noemi: I disagree; I don't think those two things are incompatible. I think as a group we are craving new people, new energy, young people especially. I think it's an awesome opportunity. Something I've noticed is that when we actually set a deadline for ourselves, we can commit to it (like we did for FTP festival). I think we can do it, I'm willing to put in the effort.
*Anka: I'm kind of in the middle. We talked about youth training being something we want to do, but it is a lot of work, and at this stage I'm not sure if we can do it. We also don't have a lot of equipment. Depends also on how long the commitment is. We need more details.
*Yousef: I also think it's a great idea, but perhaps this is not tho time for it; we need more internal organization.
*Sarah: I'm interested in teaching a screenwriting workshop, maybe just a two-day one.

Questions for Libbie to get back to us:
• What is the time commitment? (start and end, weekly meetups, hours of the day)
• What is the age range?
• How many students?
• We have limited equipment. Does this school or organization have any gear?
• Are there insurance requirements or background checks for us to be working with underage youth? Release forms?

Angel: Turned out nice

Anka: Worked out with three cars & coordination

Jabari: Went very well though not meticulously planned, still efficient and productive

Dennis: Haven't seen the footage but it seems like we got enough coverage

Liz: A bit chaotic, but we pulled it together. Good on accomodations and snacks. Great documentation

Gerald:

Dragon: Good job for a first trip, good learning

• Where can we improve?

Angel: Whenever we go out to shoot, we should have a sound recorder ready to go in case our interviewee starts saying interesting stuff before the camera crew is ready

Anka: should have talked more about the shoot itself, communication

Jabari: no complaints, we did well with what we had

Dennis: Important for us all to be on the same page before a shoot, no more last-minute stuff

Liz: Would have liked better meals, food planning and preparation

Gerald: "Fail to plan; plan to fail." Be flexible, but still have a plan.

Dragon: Better planning ahead of time about the purpose and elements of the shoot, better food accomodations

Josh recorded for an hour and the file was corrupted :( [imported audio and video into computer and deleted files on the cards... attempted to sync audio and video within a new sequence of Premiere, but the program crashed... when I went back to it, the 1.4GB wav file that had an hour of audio now only plays as four seconds of static] So there was a cooking of soup, and each person explained why it was important for each ingredient to be added. We need to figure out about the sound. We may be able to inclued in seeds of struggle. Phat beets want a piece of the footage as well.

We need to create partenships with people wiith munny. Especially if we can use the black components of our collectivce we cqn get munny from these parternships. Dennis mentioned emily who is a grant writer, and he talked to her to see the possibilties of raising us sum munny. We need to invite her so we can get the ball rolling. Dennis will be able to get in contact with emily to attend. Dennis will let us know next week when she can come. We are also waiting for reponses from the other grants which we applied for.

We need monies for:
*New camera + basic accessories (extra batteries, memory cards, etc)
*Rent? Other gear? Discuss!
