The Omni Commons is dedicated to creating and maintaining a [[Safer_Space_Policy|safe space]] for all. Unfortunately, this means that we must occasionally require certain individuals to leave and stay away from the Omni's physical or virtual space. Individuals who have been banned or asked to leave may appeal to the Challenging Dominant Culture working group to arrange for conflict mediation. Email: cdc [at] lists [dot] omnicommons [dot] org

If the Omni Oakland Collective (or any of its member collectives) consenses to ban or suspend a person, that person is immediately and automatically banned from the entire premises of the Omni Oakland Collective, including all on-premise areas of its member collectives, groups, tenants, subtenants, common areas, and external parts of the building such as the smoking area. If any member of a collective asks a person to leave for safe space reasons, that person is immediately and automatically banned from the premises, until mediation can come to a resolution. All people who have been asked to vacate the space may seek mediation, conflict resolution, and to have their voice heard by the delegates. For additional information about this, please also refer to the [[Safer Space Policy]] and our [[Conflict Resolution Policy]].

In a perfect world, the Omni would never have to ask anyone to leave nor ban anyone. Unfortunately, the reality is that due to our open and welcoming nature, many people who have been pushed out of other spaces for inappropriate behavior move on to the Omni. Most of the individuals on this page have been found to have caused problems in other spaces. As a response to this phenomenon, sudo room has forged a safe space reciprocal ban agreement with Noisebridge. As such, all individuals on [https://noisebridge.net/86 Noisebridge's 86 page] who were banned for safe space reasons are not welcome at the Omni. If you feel that you or the Omni might benefit from a reciprocal ban agreement, please contact the Challenging Dominant Culture working group, or the member collective most similar to you.

* "Perry" - 2015-02-03 -
** An olderish musician (guitarist & uke-player), claiming to be a member of FNB but who was verified to be not, who has been discovered to be wandering drunk around the space, and in so being transgressing boundaries of personal space, private dance rehearsals, and disrupting meetings. Has been asked not to come to the space drunk, agreed, but did so again anyway. Therefore, in response to the last instance where an Omnier's space was violated while he was drunk, he is provisionally banned pending conflict resolution with Omni, which he should arrange.

**David T asked someone in Sudo to borrow headphones. This went into overborrowing teritory; he left omni with them. The headphones were someone's property, a discussion about this occured, culminated into a physical and verbal confrontation.
**Jenny talked with David T and said he's not welcome at sudo room until he engages in conflict resolution.
**David T has since shown up outside the Omni and has continually be difficult to remove from the building.

*Chris - Indefinitely banned from the Omni physical space 2015-02-04

**Sleeping in the space and getting aggressive when told it wasn't appropriate
**Food Not Bombs contacted Chris about this and he has agreed to stay away from the Omni. He is currently undergoing mediation.

These individuals have expressed such damaging behavior that they have been permanently banned from the Omni Commons. They may request mediation, however, it does not have to be granted to them.

*Zachary Running Wolf
**Discussion of banning was initiated at the Delegates' meeting on 2017-7-6 after many months of ZRW ignoring Omni community agreements to not sleep or store personal belongings at the Omni, and after outbursts when ZRW yelled statements like "F--- immigrants" and used the N word. Over those months, when people reminded him about the agreements or raised concerns about his behavior, and when caught sleeping, ZRW usually responded loudly and aggressively, refusing to take responsibility, and sometimes threatening the person or the Omni. In addition, he rarely cleaned up after himself in his workspace or the kitchen, despite being asked to do so.
**During the discussion, Food Not Bombs clarified that ZRW is not a member. It was decided that the rules about admission to the building for non-members be applied to ZRW.
**Before the next meeting on 2017-7-20, ZRW warned a member who is regularly in the space to stay away from the entrance hall Shattuck side windows the following night.
**2 people representing ZRW attended the meeting that night to inform us that ZRW demanded an apology from the Omni and a key. The issues with ZRW's behavior, his threats, how people feel unsafe in the building with him due to safer space policy violations, and his history of vandalizing the building or equipment of organizations that banned him, were discussed. The final proposal passed was to continue enforcing the usual access rules for non-members with ZRW, to go ahead with mediation if he requested it, and to automatically ban him if vandalism to the building occurred. His friends agreed to communicate this to him, and to discourage him from vandalizing the building.
**At 2:30am on 2017-7-25, a beer bottle was thrown through the Shattuck side window adjacent to the main door, resulting in the final ban.
** '''UPDATE:''' On Feb 22, Running Wolf was given a keycard as a member of BAPS after mediation with SEEDS.

* we had our insurer inspection. it was a week ago. and it went probably as well as i could have expecte it to go. the person wasn't here very long. didn't ask a lot of questions, probably 90% of the questions were for CCL

All 501(c)(3) sponsored projects/orgs must have their own bank account.

For new projects/orgs the bank account must be established, with appropriate access granted to appropriate Omni finance folks, at most 30 days after the collective receives sponsorship.

For existing projects/orgs this must be completed before April 1st 2020.

If either of these deadlines are not met then sponsorship will be immediately cancelled.

For project-based fiscal sponsorships this bank account can be a sub-account of Omni or an account at another bank (not one of the banks / credit union's used by Omni since there will be an EIN collision) but if at another bank then there must be a co-signer on the account from the Omni finance committee.

For grant-based fiscal sponsorships this bank account _cannot_ be a sub-account of Omni. Grant-based organizations must get an account at a bank of their choice.

The Omni Commons is dedicated to creating and maintaining a [[Safer_Space_Policy|safe space]] for all. Unfortunately, this means that we must occasionally require certain individuals to leave and stay away from the Omni's physical or virtual space. Individuals who have been banned or asked to leave may appeal to the Challenging Dominant Culture working group to arrange for conflict mediation. Email: cdc [at] lists [dot] omnicommons [dot] org

If the Omni Oakland Collective (or any of its member collectives) consenses to ban or suspend a person, that person is immediately and automatically banned from the entire premises of the Omni Oakland Collective, including all on-premise areas of its member collectives, groups, tenants, subtenants, common areas, and external parts of the building such as the smoking area. If any member of a collective asks a person to leave for safe space reasons, that person is immediately and automatically banned from the premises, until mediation can come to a resolution. All people who have been asked to vacate the space may seek mediation, conflict resolution, and to have their voice heard by the delegates. For additional information about this, please also refer to the [[Safer Space Policy]] and our [[Conflict Resolution Policy]].

In a perfect world, the Omni would never have to ask anyone to leave nor ban anyone. Unfortunately, the reality is that due to our open and welcoming nature, many people who have been pushed out of other spaces for inappropriate behavior move on to the Omni. Most of the individuals on this page have been found to have caused problems in other spaces. As a response to this phenomenon, sudo room has forged a safe space reciprocal ban agreement with Noisebridge. As such, all individuals on [https://noisebridge.net/86 Noisebridge's 86 page] who were banned for safe space reasons are not welcome at the Omni. If you feel that you or the Omni might benefit from a reciprocal ban agreement, please contact the Challenging Dominant Culture working group, or the member collective most similar to you.

** An olderish musician (guitarist & uke-player), claiming to be a member of FNB but who was verified to be not, who has been discovered to be wandering drunk around the space, and in so being transgressing boundaries of personal space, private dance rehearsals, and disrupting meetings. Has been asked not to come to the space drunk, agreed, but did so again anyway. Therefore, in response to the last instance where an Omnier's space was violated while he was drunk, he is provisionally banned pending conflict resolution with Omni, which he should arrange.

These individuals have expressed such damaging behavior that they have been permanently banned from the Omni Commons. They may request mediation, however, it does not have to be granted to them.

*Zachary Running Wolf
**Discussion of banning was initiated at the Delegates' meeting on 2017-7-6 after many months of ZRW ignoring Omni community agreements to not sleep or store personal belongings at the Omni, and after outbursts when ZRW yelled statements like "F--- immigrants" and used the N word. Over those months, when people reminded him about the agreements or raised concerns about his behavior, and when caught sleeping, ZRW usually responded loudly and aggressively, refusing to take responsibility, and sometimes threatening the person or the Omni. In addition, he rarely cleaned up after himself in his workspace or the kitchen, despite being asked to do so.
**During the discussion, Food Not Bombs clarified that ZRW is not a member. It was decided that the rules about admission to the building for non-members be applied to ZRW.
**Before the next meeting on 2017-7-20, ZRW warned a member who is regularly in the space to stay away from the entrance hall Shattuck side windows the following night.
**2 people representing ZRW attended the meeting that night to inform us that ZRW demanded an apology from the Omni and a key. The issues with ZRW's behavior, his threats, how people feel unsafe in the building with him due to safer space policy violations, and his history of vandalizing the building or equipment of organizations that banned him, were discussed. The final proposal passed was to continue enforcing the usual access rules for non-members with ZRW, to go ahead with mediation if he requested it, and to automatically ban him if vandalism to the building occurred. His friends agreed to communicate this to him, and to discourage him from vandalizing the building.
**At 2:30am on 2017-7-25, a beer bottle was thrown through the Shattuck side window adjacent to the main door, resulting in the final ban.

Omni Sound System - Procedure to setup basic sound system
# Get the key to the storage lockup, on the left side of stage when facing the stage.
# Remove the TOA amp/powered mixer, it is heavy so you may want to use a cart.
# Set it on the table outside the storage unit or leave it on the cart, move it to the stage front near the speakers.
# Make sure the unit is off - #8 Power Switch (below)
# Plug in the unit.
# Connect the speaker cables to the back of the unit - #6 Speaker Plugs (below). Use either port on the speakers. Speakers are usually on the stage. Speaker cables are in the storage lockup.
# Make sure that all of the white knobs (TRIM & INPUT LEVEL) and the MASTER are turned down/ fully counter clockwise.
# Turn the unit on, power switch on the back of the unit.
# If using microphones connect them to inputs 2 or 3.
# After connecting a microphone, speak loudly into it & adjust the appropriate TRIM knob (top row of white knobs) clockwise slowly unit the red indicator light flashes (just above the knob), then turn the knob back just a little.
# Adjust the appropriate INPUT LEVEL knob (bottom row of knobs) clockwise about half way up.
# Adjust the MASTER control knob (lower middle with white tape "Master" written on it, clockwise about half way.
# Turn microphone on and check sound level and adjust the TRIM, INPUT LEVEL and MASTER as necessary. For voices bring low EQ down more than high EQ.

The Omni Commons is a 22,000 sq ft building, built as a meeting hall for the Ligure Club in 1933, on Shattuck and 48th. After decades serving as a social hub for members of the Oakland Scavengers club, appropriately enough, a garbage collecting collective, it was transformed into the Omni, a music venue featuring mostly heavy metal and rock that provides the namesake for this project.

==How our dominant culture views and values 'space' ($/psf) ==
A simplistic capitalist analysis which conveniently excludes many critical metrics of economic and social value is 'price-per-square-foot' ($/psf).

$/psf presumes that the 'square footage' any defined area of the building substantializes all its value and worth, regardless of who is using it or what goes in within it, while at the same time invisibilizing entirely the 'price' of labor freely given towards the success of our overall enterprise, as well as any social/public-benefit dimension, by any subtenant using said space (as this in turn directly bears on determining how much one 'should' pay per square foot). Labor and space cannot actually be divergent from ''any'' analysis of how much a given space is 'worth' or which groups should pay and where. In purely economic terms, $/psf is an innately flawed analysis and entirely doxic on its own merits for the purposes of our project.

To put it another way. This analysis excises important real-life economic and 'value'-related variables that directly impact the viability of the project and directly impact any determination of '$/psf', such as:
* 'which' subtenants actually contribute their uncompensated labor upon which the project also survives;
* the entire moral-political logics of sliding-scale, donation-based, capacity-based contribution upon which the overall project was founded and also operates daily;
* the additional integration of rental income for various spaces from outside sources which directly impacts our monthly expenses;
* the fact that some subtenants pay rent without having any dedicated space whatsoever (the 'shares' of common space model below is innately unfair to such groups)
* the fact that in practice some groups use shared spaces far more than others;
* the fact that some subtenants have other 'valuable' benefits such voting/consensus rights, potential future building-ownership rights / equity etc, while others do not,
* the fact that some subtenants that are for-profit businesses might alternately easily construe much of the expense 'per square foot' and labor 'donated' as investment in their business, while other subtenants have no profit motive,
* etc.

Actually following the $/psf model as described below would make it literally impossible to reconcile any numbers it generates with how income is actually produced to pay our expenses, nor should it imply (as it otherwise does) how much one 'should' pay for space without considering what goes on in that space.

The rates in the spreadsheet are based on the following assumptions:
* We have a fixed target rent that we ''have'' to make every month. You can adjust the rent amount on the Summary sheet.
* We want a specific fraction of that rent to come from dedicated space. Currently set to 50% on the Summary sheet - can be adjusted up if you want to more strongly discourage dedicated space.
* $/sqft for individual rooms are scaled by a quality score. Each +1 in quality correspond to a 10% increase in $/sqft (adjustable from the Summary sheet).
* I've assumed that almost all storage areas will eventually become dedicated space, even if they have not yet been allocated to individual groups yet. I've included those under a separate heading "rented".
* Given the amount of rent we want to get from dedicated space, and the amount of dedicated space all groups want, we can calculate how much we should charge for each room to exactly match the rent.
* Use of the shared space is priced separately, based on how many "shares" each group contributes. We'll need to specify how much use of the shared resources one share corresponds to - e.g. one share could be equivalent to 10 members hanging out at the Omni on a daily basis, or using one of the basement rooms once a week for a 2-hour class, or reserving the ballroom for an event twice a year.
* Groups who also have dedicated space are also required to take on a minimum number of shares proportional to the square footage of their dedicated space. In other words, we don't want groups that will lock themselves into their space and never use the shared space. I have fairly arbitrarily set that minimum number to 1 share per 500 sqft (adjustable from the Summary sheet).
* Groups who do ''not'' have dedicated space (or only have a bit of storage space) will need to make an honest calculation of how many "shares" of the shared resources of the building they will need. For now, I have picked the number of shares for BAPS and Oakland Nights Live to match the amount of rent they said they could afford to pay.
* Once we have an allocation of shares in the shared space, we simply divide the remainder of the rent proportional to those shares.
* The calculation of $/sqft for each of the rooms should only need to be done ''once'' (possibly updated if and when the total rent goes up, or if we make a policy decision to increase the %rent from dedicated space). The cost per share in the shared space may go up or down over time, depending on how many groups join or leave the Omni, and how much dedicated space actually gets rented. If groups leave, the remaining groups will need to shoulder a larger fraction of the rent, which will be reflected in a higher rate per share of the shared space.

If any member of a collective asks a person to leave for safe space reasons, that person is immediately and automatically banned from the premises, until mediation can come to a resolution. All people who have been asked to vacate the space may seek mediation, conflict resolution, and to have their voice heard by the delegates. In a perfect world, the Omni would never have to ask anyone to leave. Unfortunately, the reality is that due to our open and welcoming nature, many people who have been pushed out of other spaces for inappropriate behavior move on to the Omni. All those who wish to have amplified audio of speakers, music, theatre or prerecorded audio, please read this page.

There are three (3) discrete sound systems for use within the Omni building, as well as sound system 'accessories' such as: microphones ("mic's"), mic stands, various types of audio cables, and stand-alone small amplifier+speaker cabinet 'combos' (such as a small guitar amp).

A 'Sound System' specifically refers to: An amplifier and speaker system setup. Each of the three systems has different protocols for use to ensure their safe and effective operation. The three are:

===Seb's Ballroom Sound System: Loudest & Highest quality, also by far the most sensitive and expensive.===
===SPAZ's Ballroom Sound System: Very high quality, expensive, built with love by SPAZ.===

The first two systems, Seb's and SPAZ's, are large and not removable from the Ballroom, while the third 'TOA' is portable, can be moved anywhere in the building and be used by anyone.

Anyone can use the TOA rig, as long as they put it away properly when they are done.

The SPAZ rig can be used by anyone who is a) specifically trained on it, b) reads and follows the written instructions for 'Ballroom SPAZ Sound System' below.

Microphones and other audio devices should be configured in the ballroom in order to meet the specific needs of each particular event or arrangement. There is some subtlety to safely and skillfully operate a mixer or other soundboard to provide good sound quality. Here are some details that should help for a typical operation:

* The Mackie Mixer, and any other related equipment, should be set up in a station some place near the middle of the room, or perhaps further back toward the East wall, but still in the middle as you face the stage speakers.
** This is where you can hear volumes and issues so that you can make any necessary audio adjustments.
* Before you turn the mixer on, turn all the trim and fader nobs down.
* Using XLR, 1/4", or RCA cables (with the appropriate end for the input device), set up any of the following devices as needed, each in their own channel:
** Microphones
** Instruments
** Laptops or other computers
** Other audio devices
* Once you turn the mixer on, two lights should come on.
* Turn up the trims to 12 o'clock (up) for any relevant channels.
** There is a green light along the side of the main fader (bottom right-hand corner of mixer), which should give you a reading of what sound you are picking up currently.

The Omni Commons is a 22,000 sq ft building, built as a meeting hall for the Ligure Club in 1933, on Shattuck and 48th. After decades serving as a social hub for members of the Oakland Scavengers club, appropriately enough, a garbage collecting collective, it was transformed into the Omni, a music venue featuring mostly heavy metal and rock that provides the namesake for this project.

==Accessibility==
The Entrance Hall, Sudo Room and Counter Culture Labs are all wheelchair-accessible on the ground floor. The ballroom is accessible via a wheelchair lift via La Commune. The doorway to the Ticket Booth Room has been widened to enable wheelchair access.

Unfortunately, we do not currently have an ADA-accessible bathroom. The bathroom connected to the Entrance Hall is currently being renovated to become a single-occupancy ADA bathroom, but we have some work to do until it's complete. The bathroom in the hallway leading to Sudo Room and Counter Culture Labs is single-occupancy and can be utilized by those with some limited mobility.

We plan to have the wheelchair bathroom completed by December 15th. Long-term plans include an elevator lift to the basement and upstairs areas.

A simplistic capitalist analysis which conveniently excludes many critical metrics of economic and social value is 'price-per-square-foot' ($/psf).

$/psf presumes that the 'square footage' any defined area of the building substantializes all its value and worth, regardless of who is using it or what goes in within it, while at the same time invisibilizing entirely the 'price' of labor freely given towards the success of our overall enterprise, as well as any social/public-benefit dimension, by any subtenant using said space (as this in turn directly bears on determining how much one 'should' pay per square foot). Labor and space cannot actually be divergent from ''any'' analysis of how much a given space is 'worth' or which groups should pay and where. In purely economic terms, $/psf is an innately flawed analysis and entirely doxic on its own merits for the purposes of our project.

To put it another way. This analysis excises important real-life economic and 'value'-related variables that directly impact the viability of the project and directly impact any determination of '$/psf', such as:
* 'which' subtenants actually contribute their uncompensated labor upon which the project also survives;
* the entire moral-political logics of sliding-scale, donation-based, capacity-based contribution upon which the overall project was founded and also operates daily;
* the additional integration of rental income for various spaces from outside sources which directly impacts our monthly expenses;
* the fact that some subtenants pay rent without having any dedicated space whatsoever (the 'shares' of common space model below is innately unfair to such groups)
* the fact that in practice some groups use shared spaces far more than others;
* the fact that some subtenants have other 'valuable' benefits such voting/consensus rights, potential future building-ownership rights / equity etc, while others do not,
* the fact that some subtenants that are for-profit businesses might alternately easily construe much of the expense 'per square foot' and labor 'donated' as investment in their business, while other subtenants have no profit motive,
* etc.

Actually following the $/psf model as described below would make it literally impossible to reconcile any numbers it generates with how income is actually produced to pay our expenses, nor should it imply (as it otherwise does) how much one 'should' pay for space without considering what goes on in that space.

The rates in the spreadsheet are based on the following assumptions:
* We have a fixed target rent that we ''have'' to make every month. You can adjust the rent amount on the Summary sheet.
* We want a specific fraction of that rent to come from dedicated space. Currently set to 50% on the Summary sheet - can be adjusted up if you want to more strongly discourage dedicated space.
* $/sqft for individual rooms are scaled by a quality score. Each +1 in quality correspond to a 10% increase in $/sqft (adjustable from the Summary sheet).
* I've assumed that almost all storage areas will eventually become dedicated space, even if they have not yet been allocated to individual groups yet. I've included those under a separate heading "rented".
* Given the amount of rent we want to get from dedicated space, and the amount of dedicated space all groups want, we can calculate how much we should charge for each room to exactly match the rent.
* Use of the shared space is priced separately, based on how many "shares" each group contributes. We'll need to specify how much use of the shared resources one share corresponds to - e.g. one share could be equivalent to 10 members hanging out at the Omni on a daily basis, or using one of the basement rooms once a week for a 2-hour class, or reserving the ballroom for an event twice a year.
* Groups who also have dedicated space are also required to take on a minimum number of shares proportional to the square footage of their dedicated space. In other words, we don't want groups that will lock themselves into their space and never use the shared space. I have fairly arbitrarily set that minimum number to 1 share per 500 sqft (adjustable from the Summary sheet).
* Groups who do ''not'' have dedicated space (or only have a bit of storage space) will need to make an honest calculation of how many "shares" of the shared resources of the building they will need. For now, I have picked the number of shares for BAPS and Oakland Nights Live to match the amount of rent they said they could afford to pay.
* Once we have an allocation of shares in the shared space, we simply divide the remainder of the rent proportional to those shares.
* The calculation of $/sqft for each of the rooms should only need to be done ''once'' (possibly updated if and when the total rent goes up, or if we make a policy decision to increase the %rent from dedicated space). The cost per share in the shared space may go up or down over time, depending on how many groups join or leave the Omni, and how much dedicated space actually gets rented. If groups leave, the remaining groups will need to shoulder a larger fraction of the rent, which will be reflected in a higher rate per share of the shared space.
