Optik Allusions is a radical film collective dedicated to social change, based in Oakland, California.

We make media that challenge the dominant culture. We tell stories that otherwise might remain untold. We express our alternative views of the world, have fun doing it, and welcome everyone to do so, regardless of prior experience. We learn by doing. We share resources, skills and knowledge to support eachother's creative endeavours. We make films in a spirit of collaboration, inclusivity and solidarity, supply a lending library of film equipment for creative projects, organize free, at cost or donation-based workshops, and host film screenings.
We also steward a room dedicated to media post production at the Omni Commons. If you like to make videos and/ or become a member, come to our tuesday meetings! We're open and always happy to welcome new members.

==Announcements==
*Stephen: is going to Nevada to research for a documentary.
Amazon.com has a shipping distribution center. They recruit senior citizens that live in RV's without pensions or social security. Amazon leases these different trailer parks and shuttles them to the factory. One of the main RV parks that are on leases has a camping spots.

== Sharing space and aspirations for stage tech room ==
Let us focus on projects, positive things
We do the radio. Wednesday is the radio workshop.
We could start on the idea of the Omni Media Project
The space is there people can bring stuff there.
It is a station it would be a shame if my station was moved.
But if there are other stations. RIght now we've set up that
I don't want it to be for storage. We're going to start moving the stuff.
Not use the space as a storage space. That's kind of like a loft space as well.
What is the media project. Production making media for omni
Opal wants to keep their identity as Opal and yet together become the omni media group
Finding common sground based on what we're currently doing.
we would like to make the resources accessible.
Liz: What the delegates said at the meeting about money:
They said that what would help them is if we paid the utilities. If both our groups put our rent towards
How much money we offer.
Figure out a way to collaborate.
Figure out an amount.
Kwe: I spend more time with sound, you guys more with video.
The way I see it. Logistically, there would be a project board. Resources needed, due date. way for people to plug in to other projects;
== Educational project ==
Online platform: program for kids based on documentary journalism. They contact high schools and lend equipment for kids to make journals.
It comes with a course.
It's online. On Publico
Grants
Cal grant.
== Equipment tracking system ==
Tyler used to work for people in Austin. Guy made this software. Keeps track of everything. To keep track of everything. We should convince them to make it open source.
We could pay utilities.
Stephen: do we have leads on getting computer.
Talk to Patrick, Joe,
5pm Sarah is sweetening the deal by making madeleines.
Helena wants to do something around how women bodies are seen. She wants to have a program with a guide or a program. Anka is into it. Problem: how can you have young kids interested in it.
Sarah wants to do a commercial for her madeleines.
Anka: we could start with youth groups. Anka's friend has a youth group. There are a lot of youth groups in Oakland.
== Fundraising campaign ==
* Content: things that show how the space is being used.
* Interviews, faces.
* Francisco making food
* Marc microscope
* Lynice Pinkard
* Patrick's comics class
* Women's variety show
== Name and logo ==
== Apropriating and applying MyBlock model==
-Workshops + Web video platform for Oakland's young women.
-Posibility of integrating an educational program for a specific community as one of OpAl's projects.
-Possible collaborators.
==Attendees==
*Icebreaker: "What's the most impactful thing you've seen at a protest"
**Nicholas: [Works for a non-profit building stages, also part of a group that puts on free showings of locally-made short films at parks in SF] When I was about 10, I was at the theater with my stepdad and brother. We came out of the protest and it was so violent, there was a lady on the ground and people were kicking her, there were police everywhere, and my dad grabbed us both and ran outta there
**Sarah: My very first protest at age 12, anti-iraq war. I went with my dad and he was so happy that I was there with him, because when he was my age he was out protesting the Vietnam war
**Noemie: In France, protests are not as violent as here. I'm not used to being surrounded by helicopters.
**Liz: First raid at OSF
**Helena: 2004 in Dublin, Ireland, G20 protest, Black bloc. The police had water hoses, and I got hit with a rock from another protester. So it wasn't really police brutality but protester brutality, haha. There was a lot of looting and rioting, broken windows, fires.
**Kwic: Rodney King protests

==Announcements==
*Yesterday's protest: Stephen, Noemie and Sarah were there
*Liz: Offered to make a fundraiser video for La Commune, anyone else interested? :D
**Noemie, and Helena depending on the timing of it
==Sharing space and aspirations with Unit 1==
*Stating our goals, vision and what we have in common
**Kwic: Unit 1's goals - A media department to capture the progress and expression of the Omni community.
**OpAl's goals - Production team, provide filmmaking resources/classes/equipment to communities who usually don't have access or whose voices are generally not heard (women, people of color, queer, etc).
**What Unit 1 does/ has done/ will be doing concretely - One of the main things we'd like to do is highlight the positive things happening within the Omni. Part of the organizing group for the fundraiser launch, will document the event, broadcast on internet/radio/cable forums.
**What OpAl does/has done/will be doing concretely - We plan to make media about Omni, but also go out to events and document happenings elsewhere. OpAl has completed one grant video and a fundraiser video for Omni. Sarah will be teaching a screenwriting class soon.
**What we have in common - digital film production, Omni-related media
**What we don't have in common - things that one group does and the other one doesn't - document protestsand events beyond Omni
*Sharing space
** Respective Visions:
***OpAl: Making the space and resources accessible to the wider public. Using the space to make omni/independent/activist media. Equipment library to be made accessible to the public. Center for Omni/independent media production.
***Unit 1: Would like to use the room for video and radio production, will be conducting interviews.
**Organizing the space in an equitable manner - log in reservation system?
**How to keep it a commons and make sure it is used in a non proprietary fashion
**concrete plans for space organizing
* Sharing aspirations
**Opening the possibility of doing things together.
*Communication somewhat breaks down - we have some misperceptions to clear up, will table the conversation until next time

==Action items==
* Blueprint for layout and use of space (Upper room and small room beneath)
==Creative chaos/Pizza Party!==
*Making short vignettes for the funraising campaign: life at the Omni. Francisco making soup / Lynice teaching how to be a spiritual warrior/ Food Not Bombs distributing Food/Kwic's awesome sunday event/Mesh folks setting up a node on the roof/ etc.

*Noemie: I don't know, people have told me I look like the girl from "Dirty Dancing". In a weird unempowering way I really relate to Blanche DuBois from "Streetcar Named Desire" when she's screaming "I don't want realism! I want MAGIC!"
*Stephen: The Argentinian journalist from "Habla con Ella", I relate to his emotional journey
*Hayley: I haven't seen a movie character I relate to in a long time... maybe Atreyu in "Neverending Story"
*Sarah: Xena, Warrior Princess! Or Simone de Beauvoir in the biopic "Violet". Or Mary Lennox from "The Secret Garden".
==Announcements==
*Hayley: villagecraft party & listing workshops
How can we quickly get everyone who was talking about workshops signed up and ready? We want the workshops on the site before saturday's event.
*FOR VILLAGECRAFT PARTY RSPV here: https://villagecraft.org/e/9c055574-villagecraft-s-birthday-party-in-berkeley-ca If you want to speak about an upcoming workshop, please sign up before Wednesday at: http://form.jotform.us/form/43067652046151
* Hayley: Occupy The Farm film: go see it!
* Ready Richman is coming in 2ish weeks, Re: film festival, we could get in touch with him to co organize it maybe?
==Pizza party==
* Let's have a pizza party to celebrate the release of the fundraiser video, and brainstorm more easy projects that we can do to build our portfolio and get in the practice. Time of brainstorming session TBD! Tentatively, after next week's meeting.
* Korl wants to make a film about a love story from the shin to the feet.
* Noemie wants to do a story about the robot.
==Hello I'm Steven==
* I have an idea for a documentary project. Amazon hires seasonal workers for Christmas, they have a spcial program for older folks who can't afford to retire and live in RV's. I'll be going to a small town in Nevada where these people have an RV park and get shuttled to the Amazon facility. I consider this to be research for a longer film project next year and I'm looking for collaborators.
==Proposal for Omni==
* Anticipate questions : why we do not ask to be a member collective? Suggestions:
**Being members of other omni collectives, our members do not have a strong need to be represented through opal at this time.
**Opal's membership seems too small today to take on the responsibility of attending all working groups.
**We'd like to engage in actual concrete film productions and get a sense that our collective is functioning before becoming involved in omni wide decision making
**We want to learn how to work with omni as tenants before becoming more involved.
* Korl: as a tenant we are "at the mercy" of the member collectives.
* On the other hand it's a lot of work to have someone in each working group.
* Reading the sublease terms
* Discuss rent and dues collection
** Create a budget template that includes dues, fundraising goals, grants, etc.
** How much for utilities?
** Set up a gratipay account? Or cash in a lockbox?
*** Straw poll, $20/mo: 5 people
*** $15/mo: 1 person
== Appearing on the omni website==
**At some point soon I'd like to add your collective to the omni commons website
Ice breaker - "What's the weirdest date you've ever been on?"
* Noemie: "He was German... I won't go into any more details."
* Sarah: After being dumped by the love of her life when she was 17, she said to herself, "Fuck men. I'm going to date women." She went out on a date with a very small girl that she liked a lot, but after awhile the girl said, "A date? I thought we were just hanging out." Sarah said "Fuck this, I can't be friends with you." The girl said "Wait! But I've always thought about dating a girl..." and she kissed Sarah. That's when Sarah knew... it would never work out.
* Patrick: In highschool, he went on a date with a girl he really liked. He could tell that the girl had made up her mind that they were going to kiss that day, and she got dolled up and they went on a hike. He was super nervous the whole time, until they they finally kissed. The date ended uneventfully.
* Sam: doesn't have a story to recount right now...
* Jesse: Dated a super Christian girl in high school. She convinced him to go to her church group at the Nazarene church. The group was full of jocks and cheerleaders from his school who were always getting high and partying, but they were repenting and crying. Jesse still doesn't understand how he got sucked into it, but pretty soon he was also doing confession and crying. He snuck away when no one noticed.
* Liz: Long story, but she accidentally went on a date with an older guy she met at a rave. They went to the San Francisco Zoo. At the end they walked to the beach and ate gummy bears and he tried to kiss her, and she had to turn him down. They never talked again.
* Joe: too many weird dates to recount. Meta analysis is that Joe is just into crazy girls.
* Hayley also in attendance

==Announcements==
* Noemie made a quick Einstein video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRE5wqxjSvQ&feature=youtu.be) and has made contact with Oakland North, a hyper local news station.
* Occupy the Farm (the movie) just came out! Noemie is going to see it with some Occupy Oakland people on Saturday night. Screening here at Omni!
* Sarah has an announcement: She finished half of her script!
* And now, A TOAST! TO US! *clink clink clink clink!*

==Proposal for Omni==
W.I.P! :D
https://docs.google.com/document/d/173vqdRxICqY4ZnAo48NeSjyB6J7mgftdTi5ZF7VwG5E/edit
Liz, Sarah, and Noemie have been working on it, but feel free to give feedback. Please don't delete anything, just add comments or new sections.

==OPAL Website==
Action items to get our website: choose a domain name! Some people think we should change the name, we're going to work on it for a week.

==Omni fundraising video, discussion==
Some people feel like their time and work was not valued and that Noemie made decisions that disregarded people's work and the collective.
*Intro: Is bringing all issues to the collective for the sake of transparency always the most fair thing to do, as opposed to having interpersonal interactions?
** Noemie: I actually think we should be communicating in an interpersonal level with each other, and bring it to everyone if we haven't found resolution. Bringing issues to the collective is also not always the fairest thing to do: transparency and collectivising issues actually prioritizes the ones that are the most entitled, the most privileged, and for whom it is easiest to speak in public.
*People's experience of what happened: Noemie feels like her role as a director was disregarded.

"Joel didn't do his work as an editor. Jesse and Joel disregarded my input as a director. Didn't answer my emails. Jesse started colorgrading although I was still trying to initiate a dialogue with Joel on the choices to make for the edits.
Danny sent Jesse emails about what needs to be done. My role was disregarded. I think there is a gender issue behind this.
When we met you only had half an hour and Joel was not there.
I was rushed. When I sat with Liz it was finally doing the work that I was hoping to do. I learnt a lot from it. It was great and I don't regret it.
I made the decision to do the editing with her, and I advised you by SMS the next morning. At that point you were the only other person involved so I advised you. It's not true that I didn't advise you."

*Planning the production (and post-production) workflow and schedule: what was the deadline here?
*Communicating our expectations and defining roles clearly:
**Who was directing?
**Who in the fundraising committee is charge of communicating with us about the video? (matt)
**How to define roles clearly so that people's time is valued.
*Is it a problem to make several versions of the video? (learning through do-ocracy, remix, reuse)
*Jesse was disappointed that the cut he did was not included in the screening at the Omni meeting
*consent on the goal to empower women and folks who are usually less privileged (women, people of color, queers, mentally diverse and differently abled folks) to take leadership in the projects they bring to the group.

===Conclusions: how to do things better in the future===
* Make sure all email conversations that contain information that is pertinent to the whole group get CC'd to the listserv (or whoever is necessary).
* Have clearly defined roles in the future.
* Separate roles from hierarchy; they do not have to be the same thing.
==Creating a curriculum!==
Hayley: Villagecraft has a meeting of all the folks who want to do a class, where people pitch their ideas and meet each other. She thinks using this forum would help bring awareness to the classes we would like to teach. She'll send an email with more details! Anyone who wants to teach a class, start working on the syllabus!
==Consensus Items==
*CC licensing : initiate a discussion on our view on CC licensing. Even if we end up having diverging opinion and practices on CC licensing, it is worth discussing having it in our values/vision.
For clarification, there are several kinds of Creative Commons licensing, combining any and all of the following clauses:
BY - attribution : you must properly cite the creator of the work.
SA - share-alike : if you remix or add to a work, you must license it under the original license.
NC - noncommercial : no commercial use of the work.
ND - no derivatives : no remixing or adding to it, essentially proprietary.
Another alternative to copyright is "Copyleft", which is similar to CC-BY-SA. Yet another option is to release work into the Public Domain.
For further research, go explore [ http://creativecommons.org ] and [ https://wiki.creativecommons.org/Frequently_Asked_Questions#If_I_derive_or_adapt_material_offered_under_a_Creative_Commons_license.2C_which_CC_license.28s.29_can_I_use.3F ]
Advice from Joe:
Type of licensing always depends on the project. In the past, Joe has gotten a conventional copyright for his work, and then release another version under a CC license. Indie artists and individuals were free to use his work according to his license, but if any corporation picked it up (as Fox did once), he still had a copyright hammer to prevent the corporation from capitalizing on his work. YEAH GO JOE!!!
*Why should we strive to make our work CC licensed and claim it aloud? Why should it be nodal in the definition of our mission?
** CC licensing is the continuation of OpaL's work to put resources and means of production in common. The idea is that the products of our culture and civilization should be accessible for the public to see and remix.
**Exclusive rights regimes (copyright) use intellectual property to control and dominate. In resistance to the power that be, we would commit to anticopyright, where we would subvert the traditional notions of creative expression in favor of remix culture.
**By chosing to release our work in CC license, OptikAllusions would commit to creating a new paradigm, dwindling the power of the middle men, the majors, the producers, the TV channels and the institutions, in favor of the artists and the public. This new paradigm allows for the public to have access to the product of our culture, while allowing authors, creative people of all sorts, to receive a more direct retribution for their work.
In order to preserve rights formally for others whenever possible, we would use creative commons license or equivalent. But we would encourage people to use their rights of fair use or fair dealings and otherwise repurpose works freely, without fear, in a spirit of solidarity and encouraging collaboration over competition.
See Aaron Swartz Open Access manifesto, it applies to film!
*Joe - several film screenings: a series in November (emailed list serv about it), and a livestream event in December. Looking for technical help.
*Danger - he and a friend put on a short film screening, it was well received, so they would like to make it a monthly event. Will take place at different locations each time, may be interested in hosting in the Omni basement. Wants to create a space for filmmakers to screen their own work and get feedback
*Korl - Film night this week: The Internet's Own Boy, followed by Hackers, with discussion in between. Friday 10/24 at 7pm in the basement! BE THUR https://www.facebook.com/events/917743051589113
*Noemie - Fundraiser update: video looks great, working on sound, then music will be added. Sam is still working on the music.
*Joe again - Going to see the Snowden documentary "Citizen Four", in San Francisco the Embarcadero at 8pm on Thursday. This is the first showing of the opening night!

==Proposal for Omni==
*Sarah would like help in drafting a proposal for Omni; the details of our ideal arrangement are still sketchy.
*Joe - There are a lot of film-oriented events coming into Omni that are not affiliated with OpAl, and are being put on by people who aren't adequately prepared to set up such events. It was critical that Joe and other tech-minded people were present to help, otherwise the event wouldn't have happened. Joe would like OpAl to be more proactive about offering assistance to any film events people want to put on.
*Liz - went a little nuts and did a lot of work to figure out how much would be fair to offer for the room, located in Helena's google doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1A4EoTZg1EVmj5L7bu48AR4aAOBFbax_sOcNxpIu5Dhg/edit. Also includes an official member roster. **Noemie, please don't include this link when you translate to the Wiki. OpAl members have it in their email inbox, it is not intended to be public**
*Noemie and Sarah will work on the proposal this week. We should be prepared to pitch to Omni with money-in-hand (collect $10 from each official member)

==Consensus Items==
*Niko: Are we really happy with the name??
*Korl: willing to donate the name of her old photography/graphic design business, Obscura Lucida (nickname ObLuz? haha)

==Fundraiser video==
*Inspiration for Sam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQmfaQ5oqWM
*We screened Sam's rough cut and gave feedback.

==Action items==
• Noemie will send Sam the final picture cut tomorrow (Wednesday)
• Sam will aim to have a synched edit by Thursday or Friday.
• Think about alternate names and we'll talk about it next week!
Attendees and Ice breaker
"What is your name and what do you like to do when no one is looking?"
* Sarah likes to smoke pot when no one is looking
* Liz likes to read books...
* Anthony (non-member) likes to sleep
* Sam likes to write and draw
* Nico lives in public
* Tyler edits on the computer when no one is looking
* Korl likes to be productive when no one is looking
* Joe arrived late, he got shanghai'd into doing some other work
==Announcements==
* Mia from BAPS offered use of her netflix account for Omni Film Night
* Joe: the media center has grown in the amount of equipment they're going to get. Joe plans to form a floating collective that includes members of Sudo, OpAl, and BAPS, who can be responsible for keeping the media center up and running, and running its own calendar. Working title: the wildcard collective. Where will it be? Matt Senate suggested the work station tables in Sudo, in front of the big screen TV
* Sarah: met the founder of an SF based LGBT collective called Periwinkle, they are interested in connecting with us
* Sarah: Noemie wants to do an indie news network, and Sarah was contacted by some activists who asked her to film an eviction.
== Discussion on Optik Allusions' Values and Mission ==
===Values===
===Description of our actions/what we do===
* Equipment rental
* Education (giving classes)
* Particular projects (what kinds?)
===General discussion on this topic===
Tyler used to be part of an equipment rental house in Austin TX, which had plans to become a co-op. Their business model was to attract as many gear-owning filmmakers as possible to pool resources together, thereby gaining access to other equipment in the resource pool and developing a reputation through responsible use. Non-members could rent equipment if they have a credit card for the co-op to keep on file. Tyler left before the rental house made this transition.
What do we (individually) want to do most?
* Sarah wants to do projects, learn how to use equipment, give screenwriting classes
* Liz wants to do projects and give away her very expensive education for free
* Korl wants to do projects and hack equipment to make it better
* Joe wants to empower people with digital media skills, give classes that take people through sample projects and come together as a real finished product in the end
* Sam would like to see more exploration in multi-media production (like 3D projection, software that creates visuals for music, etc)
* Nico would like to screen films, maybe do a festival, organize conferences and discussions; bring people together in general
* Helena wants to learn more and develop her film skills
* Tyler has two interests: teaching media skills, and having a community of people with various skills who will be accountable to each other to actually make stuff
==Proposal for Omni==
===Items to include:===
* Which room
* how much we can afford, where our revenue comes from, proof that our revenue stream will be reliable
Liz: I don't think we necessarily need our values and mission statement fleshed out in order to apply for tenancy; Omni members will specifically want to know how much we can pay and that we can pay

==Fundraiser video==
* Omni Funding Vid: Edit review
** V1 with no music - coming soon to a laptop near you (currently uploading) (password: commons)
** V2 with 1st music selection - https://vimeo.com/108955866/ (password: commons)
** (both have mixed sound, 1st pass)
** Musical decisions
Sam offers to compose it. But let's see the version Jesse and Joel made with music.
** Dialogue edits - Noemie's suggestions
*** Robots that pour tea: we could replace it with another one where she's not laughing (her laughing removes the humour from the situation).
*** (there's) pretty much anything you can think of you can do here at omni: we could remove the there
*** It's not all radical (though): replace though by theory (i left a zoom and a wired lav in the optik allusions locker
*** They've been serving food to the hungry since 1980(s): removing the s should be doable

** Edit - Noemie's suggestions: cut the ballroom scene shorter and take it as an opportunity to do a straight cut instead of fade to black.

** Color correction - how's it working for everyone? I transitioned between about 14 correction "looks" during this current version
** Final finishing schedule: We have another week left. To be checked with Matt.
** Strategy - campaign street team, length of fundraiser, task assignment

===Comments on video from meeting===
* Sarah dislikes the music, feels that it doesn't fit, it feels a little jerky in places

* Sam has a detailed description of his vision for the piece he's going to compose:
"Here's a bit of a description in words of what I'm aiming for at the
moment. It's a bit scattered and sketchy, but maybe it'll help give
you an idea what I'm looking at.
I think I will have both algorithmic/electronic sounds for Sudo and
CCL, with acoustic and dance sounds for the Ballroom, Yoga, and Cafe.

They'll share a theme, but it'll get spacey and a bit out of rhythm

when talking about mad science CCL stuff. Robot will bring time back,
without melody, which will filter into industrial and polyphonic
sounds for the printing press. Haven't figured out BAPS yet, but
it'll start to get more traditional dance and accoustic for the
Ballroom. It'll become more chordal and less dance for the Yoga, but
will then aim for some joviality with Food not Bombs (with dissonance,
of course). Return to theme, with a bit more flesh and sub-theme
happiness with the Cafe again, and perhaps change nature a bit when
wrapping things up.

Anyway, I'm also not sure what will come out of various collaborations

and jams I aim to have during the week, so I'd expect a few changes
and twists, and I'd be happy to work with any suggestions as well."

* Sam invites comments and ideas, email him at sam.tepper@gmail.com

* Nico suggests not just putting in music we like but music that will appeal to other crowds

==Action Items==
* Create an official roster of members
* Start collecting rent money for the editing suite
* Add our proposal to Omni agenda, be prepared to pitch it at next week's general meeting
Hi Liz :)
After the shoot on sunday I drove to south san jose to house sit for family friends

==Announcements==

* Donation! Joe found us donations!!! a friend of his wants to give us 10 copies of the creative suite
6 macs yeah!!thank you joe!!
* Media Lab is a concept that Joe came up for a baps class: intro to desktop and deck publishing. Lots of activists with good ideas but no tool knowledge to format it and get it in front of people. class starts in november. He opens the class to people that don"t have computers. Space to be determined.
Could be same space as Film collective?
Could be as long as it is always the same place. So that the media lab is always the media lab. Make sure that it is accessible to all collective and make sure it is accessible.
It's a common resources, they will all be equipped for video editing. Joe's project encompasses ours.
* Korl: i tracked down Black Hole cinema: they are a dark room rounded around celluloid film processing. I didn't donate my canon super 8 auto zoom. Black hole has the processor to develop it! yay! They will have a way to do that
* Is the cost associated to film associated to the processing? Yes. It's expensive. The more people contribute to the dark room chemicals the cheapest it will be. if everybody at this table chipped in 10 dollars we could afford a scanner.
* Joe has 35 darkroom equipment. We could shoot 8 mm!
* Jesse: chemical processing has gotten way better. Fuji has been making a super tight grain 8 mm: Super super 8! It's like HD. It doesn't require anything new.
* The labs are closing though. But we'llhave our own lab!

== Postproduction stategy for long take funding video - tools and personnel==
* Video is awesome
* Jesse: it is more of a technical discussion. First high level decision. Diegetic sound. It's the sound of the place.
* Suggestions to be posted here https://pad.riseup.net/p/optikallusions_musicsuggestions

* credits: Korl doesn't want her name on the credits of the video, but a pseudo: sk
== Discussion on Optik Allusions' Values and Mission ==
===Values===
* Collaboration
* Solidarity
* Dismantling and challenging patriarchy, heteronormativity and anthropocentrism
* Representing the under-represented, and even allowing access to the tools necessary for anyone - including misrepresented or under represented cultures and communities - to represent themselves, to tell their own stories.
* Diversity and Awareness
* Putting the power of making images in the hands of people.

===Description of our actions/what we do===
* Share equipment, make it accessible
* Classes and workshop to train people how to make films: writing, image, light, editing, etc.
* Create tools for participative story-telling.
* Make compelling films to inspire social change, give a voice and a camera to anyone with a desire to express themselves through film.
* Help make films with complete creative freedom.
* Create a network of solidarity so that making films will be easier.
* Experiment new narrative forms

==Consensus Items: Lending our equipment==
Alana desperately needs lights for the play and needs help from people who know how to work theater lights. Another need: projectors around the Omni.

* We want to make our equipment accessible.
* Get a cabinet insurance thing? Get that list of equipment insured. Simple equipment insurance.
All of our stuff should be insured. For just renters: sliding scale deposit? case by case.
Korl would like to work on an outline. Maybe pay a membership?
Think of a membership fee that would be the best deal in town.
Sarah, if someone wants to borrow equipmeent they should come to a meeting and pay membership (sliding scale)
Sarah: we should have a two tier system. Donated equipment should be easier than the expensive equipment we fundraise for. There is legacy gear and the good shit.
Have the borrower be vouched by one person from one collective.
Alana: you could have a simple form where they explain in detail how many hours and when and where. A formal proposal.
If the borrower is outside of the collective, we should have someone of the collective be there in the crew.
* Check out system
* make sure they know how to use it.
* One meeting, sliding scale, and a training to make sure they use it properly. File everything. Make sure everything is insured.
* We should do a training every two weeks. adapted to the equipment that is required.
* Jesse: consider, if someone has broken equipment we file an insurance policy we get the thing back, do we lend it again? make it depend on the group's consensus.

* Who could help Alana learn how to use them? Jesse and Sarah!

==Action Items==
* Korl and Noemie to work on a membership and equipment rental policy?
* Researching insurance policy
* Jesse to do a workshop on lighting this week.
* Sarah to film the eviction on friday.
* Sarah is writing the mission statement.

Attendees and Ice breaker
* Joe keeps changing name for his job title, and now it is: artisanal legend crafter/ Sunday: I put on a hard hat and sang macho man.
* Joel is with TIL, On sunday after the shoot I passed out.
* Sarah is a sudo er, on sunday she worked harder than ever in a long time. Was worth it. She collapsed and fell asleep in a cemetary. it is very cinematic. Place to shoot.
* Marc met Sarah a while ago, is in Oakland to shoot a thesis film.
* Grandma Danko or Natale: has been 3 times at omni. Twice while volunteering with FNB. Was involved in Occupy Toronto. Just got back from volunteering in an urban open space in India. Passionate about open spaces. Creating common access to workshops. Encourage people to make a social impact. She was there on sunday, ended up 3 times in the same video.
* Alana's reason to be here is that she's directing a play at the end of the month.
* Korl is an internet addict, also collapsed after the shoot, was tired for the first time in years before 9pm. Can't believe that we talked her into doing it, that she did it without puking. She did a great job.
== Announcements ==

* Noemie, Matt and Jenny cleared the small room at the top of the Sudo stairs to be set up as the Optik Allusions editing room and storage

* Liz brought in a lockable cabinet to store stuff. She and Noemie have keys, currently

Hayley would also like a key to store sound gear

we can create a checkout log

* On Friday 10/3 at 6pm, Noemie is hosting a workshop on how to use the collaborative editing tool she has helped develop

* Film night
First film night was on the 26th, common space downstairs, there's suggestions for next film night, made $8 in donations, roughly a dozen people attended. Mailing list to suggest films would be an idea. We can also have a fisical box where people can put papers with their suggestions.
...
Film night went super well
Around 12 people came
two movies
8 dollars in donations for snacks for the next movie night
Korl was gonna do a raffle for suggestions
How about advertising outside of the Omni already existing community?
Korl wants to make it a way to bring cohesion within the community.
Helena: yeah but we're a radical community we should invite people from the outside.
Joe: I'm trying to get the classes on village craft to be sponsored by baps and vice versa so that we get more.
Korl might set up an email address that people can write to to suggest a film. A physical box in the omni + a mailing list!
She could send an email to the mailing list to tell people what the written suggestions have been lately, to get a sense of which suggestions get the most enthusiasm
Korl listed film night on the calendar, plans to get a mail box to receive film suggestions, also posted her email on the film night's wiki page for people to send submissions
* grants.
We should come up with a budget.
Field trip to The Fundation to learn about 990-money that entity makes about what they want to fund- (Ask Hailey).
What can we get a grant for?
We need to research
Also need a 501c3 to recieve grant money (not necessarily that WE are a 501c3)

Patrick suggests that we use our friend Tree's non-profit, The No Penny Opera

Haley: It would be interesting to have a budget. I have a personal goal of spending more time at the foundation center. People form grants are going to help me. It might be a fun field trip.
Helena: grants came up today. We are in a place where we should do research. What can we get a grant for.
There needs to be a non profit that would accept the money on our behalf.
Jesse can open source the grant applications of Hoop dreams's director!
We'll start a document with all the documentation we find.
Google drive folder.

== Mission statement to become a collective ==

Sarah and Patick are working on it.
7 p pay 20 dollars
Haley would pay 20 dollars if it gave her a voice in quorum, if she feels like she can present ideas to the omni.
Our initial aim is to grab the room. It's more important to us to quickly achieve tenancy.
We're aiming for tenancy but since there is no application for that so we want.
Sarah wants to think about what the projects are.

== Website and mail-list news ==
Website: Joe feels we should table it for after the kickstarter video. there are a lot of prerequisites to talk about. Let's wait for after the kickstarter video.
We could get started on design. The mail list today has a new structure. Go to omnicommons.org/list
we could have one within the omni.
from a usability standpoint it makes us more visible to anyone who goes to omni.org
We all want to do it, and Joe will make it happen!

== Hayley's Project ==

Sketch comedy show about coops.
Either a radio show or tv show or both.
berkeley live is interested in hearing more.
Haley made someone from sesame street but the idea would be to experiment it in slingshot. The collective would make decisions about what segments would go in. Experiment of having a process: with slingshot we have individual authors we don't have the collective writing for them but we also have acollective decision making process about how to make the paper, so we have a say on the discourse and how we want our publication presented. I envision it as a focus thinsg, a sketch comedy about housing coops. If the house decides as a group projects to do it, they could sit down an write it and we'd come to help them. It would be a team building exercise.
Interact with each of these coops.
And then present these lifestyles to the public.
Having a metanarrative for each episode.
It's hedged in conversations.
Jesse: it could be cool if we did a 72 hour film festival. You'd be able to curate a set of content cohesive under whatever brief you make.
Only a hour of the content.
Noemie: we could use the collaborative editing tool i'm working on, do editathon
we could use the model of place for a sustainable living. Maybe there would be an editathon. and then a concert!
It might be like creating a cohesive hour long sketch comedy show. People could get a sense of the flavor. Insider jokes us laughing at ourselves.
Sarah: are there other people involved or is it just your idea?
Would this be part of the Optikallusions mission statement?
Jesse: the fact that O.A. would curate syndicated content, that's mission statement worthy.

== Omni fundraising video ==

* bring extras? make facebook event?

* Joe got a lukewarm reception at BAPS

Vampire Poetics said no

The chess club and Greek class plan to attend

* Noemie also got very little response

talked with FNB, they said they will be cooking from 1 - 3:30pm, they will not cook later. Maybe have Francisco cook instead? Noemie would like to pass off communications to someone else
3 Omni Dance people have committed
Quick (Sudo) has volunteered, needs follow-up
Noemie would like to pass off the ballroom to someone else
Patrick and Helena will coordinate the ballroom together

* Joel estimates 4 people from TIL

* Helena has 4 committed people

* Hayley suggests putting a call out to VillageCraft asking if anyone wants to put on a workshop at Omni on that day

* Joel talked with David Brazil (La Commune) and got a positive response but not a firm committment

* timing

* Jesse, Liz and Noemie met on Sunday 9/28 to do camera blocking. It took roughly 3 minutes (Jesse calculates 2:55 after time ramping).

* Logistics: equipment and props, lights, contacts

Only lav left

Contact list added to google doc

guide subs: suggestions? Mary from CCL

* script

Hayley would like to workshop the script

Liz's concern: the kitchen in the fire hallway is not supposed to be there and is not supposed to be used, she suggests that we reroute camera path

write shoot schedule.
