Working groups are made up of members from all different collectives as well as individuals who are not affiliated with any collectives but want to join the collective effort of the Omni. These groups function as a way to collectivize the labor required to operate the space. Working groups are a great way to get involved, share skills, ideas, opinions and learn from each other how collective action takes place. If you'd like to be a part of one of the working groups, please join one of the mailing lists below to receive information on meetings and actions to be done.

* If you see a need for a new working group, propose its purpose and scope at a delegate’s meeting.
* Once approved by the delegates, work with fellow group members to compose a vision statement and scope for the working group. Create a working group page on the wiki and post your vision there.

This is Laura T. I cant attend the meeting but want to support whatever visioning and planning process we decide we need. I'm pasting here an overview of the process I mean when I say Strategic planning.
STRATEGIC PLANNING

When organizations and groups set aside time for participatory Strategic Planning, they need to define:

a FOCUS for the planning (what are the key issues and challenges we need to be sure to address in our planning?) and, in the light of that focus they need to define

WHO needs to be involved in the implementation and therefore the planning process, and then define
the details of the PROCESS to use and how to allocate the time effectively in developing the plan. The skeleton of the process is as follows:

ENVIRONMENTAL SCAN: What is going on that we need to respond to (globally, in the community we serve, in our chosen field of work, in our own history, internally within our group)? For OC that might mean reviewing our accomplishments, naming what is working well and what isn’t, and honing our understanding of our purpose.

PRACTICAL VISION: What would we like to see in place 3-5 years from now as a result of our efforts?

UNDERLYING CONTRADICTIONS: What current obstacles are blocking the realization of our vision? This is the crux of the process where the group names the systems, root causes, embedded patterns of behavior, mental images held by the group about its identity, etc that hold the group back. Contradictions may be the habits or patterns that have helped the organization thrive to this point but will now get in the way of achieving the Vision, or unresolved contradictory values the prevent the full realization of either (such as wanting to be open to all but also wanting safety). An underlying contradiction is something that is real, kept alive by group members in some way, and something that they can change.

STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS: What actions / directions do we need to take in the next year or two to deal with the obstacles and move us towards our vision? The group decides what changes they will work toward that will unblock their potential to accomplish their vision. These are often changes that crosscut the organization; that everyone needs to participate in shifting.

IMPLEMENTATION TIMELINE: What do we actually intend to accomplish in the coming year (or several years)? by when?

90 DAY LAUNCH CALENDAR: What are the priority tasks for launching our plan, and what are the detailed steps and assignments to ensure their accomplishment?

The 90 day calendar enables the group to check in quarterly on their progress and remanuever in response to the always changing reality, while always keeping an eye on the strategic directions and the vision.

===Summary===

The Omni Oakland Commons (OOC) will be a shared community space – “a commons with a roof” – meeting the underserved needs of Oakland exponentially more than we can in our existence apart.

===Needs in our community===

Spaces in Oakland are increasingly expensive, exclusive, and out of the hands of communities without access to means of producing a better, more joyous livelihood. From a history of uneven development, Oakland’s future needs basic space and resources that serve as community anchors. Bridging gaps in social services and continuing education can be accomplished by bringing together separate initiatives.

===Members and collectivized risk takers===

The OOC is made up of several Bay Area collectively-operated groups. We have roots in Oakland for many years and a shared vision that prioritizes people’s needs over private profit.

Members includes these eight groups, which represent 250 active participants and reach to 5,000 individuals through mailing lists and other channels, as well as other groups and individuals interested in using the space.

Risk takers include these members as well as neighborhood residents and organizations, community beneficiaries throughout the Bay Area, donor and partner entities, and allied initiatives locally and beyond.

===Unique model and value===

The OOC models a community initiative where space and resources are mutually shared and cared for. We invite collectives and groups to join us in establishing this hub for the use and stewardship of the greater community. Every person and activity brings value to the space as a whole.

Our unique model unites social services, continuing education, co-working and project space, and civic life. We support these activities by providing designated spaces for specific activities and common spaces open for everyone.

We are intimately familiar with the needs and assets involved. Three of the founding member collectives have qualified experience providing space together at their current location. Our accomplishments range from creating an Oakland independent wi-fi to organizing a panel discussion featuring feminist scholar Silvia Federici.

===Operations===

The OOC is established as a public benefit corporation to administer a property with space and pooled resources. The OOC will hold a master lease and sublease to several member collectives.

A delegates council will represent member groups in facilitating decision making regarding the shared space. A stewardship team will oversee essential functions of administering the space, collecting fees, and paying bills.

===Project phases and costs===

Phase 1, leasing the building: the OOC leases the space, builds out the interior, strengthens community support, validates our idea and business model revenue and cost assumptions, and formalizes out operating model.

* Move-in costs of $X include first month and security deposit plus appx. $Y legal fees and $Z build-out and general improvements. We have $X in contributions from member collectives plus access to appx. in private, no-interest loans.

* Monthly operating costs of $X include monthly rent, utilities, X% of property tax, upkeep and maintenance, insurance, legal, and other bills. We expect rent fees for space us from 8 member collectives, booked events and produced events, private donations, community development grants, and no- or low-interest loans.

Phase 2, purchasing the property: Omni develops a major capital fundraising and financing strategy, evaluates a healthy and sustainable plan, secures partners and allies (e.g., land trust), and executes transaction.

* The long-term goal of purchasing the building costs of $1.95M at current market price. We will lease with option to purchase within X years, secured with a down payment of $XX.

Phase 3, owning the property: Omni changes operating structure (e.g., ownership and management roles and responsibilities), changes financial structure, and prepares for the future.

Rent is paid through a consensus process. Groups commit to paying what they can and we work together to help each other meet their commitments.
Fees and shares are determined by need and ability to pay.

The Omni Oakland Commons (OOC) will be a shared community space – “a commons with a roof” – meeting the underserved needs of Oakland exponentially more than we can in our existence apart.

===Needs in our community===

Spaces in Oakland are increasingly expensive, exclusive, and out of the hands of communities without access to means of producing a better, more joyous livelihood. From a history of uneven development, Oakland’s future needs basic space and resources that serve as community anchors. Bridging gaps in social services and continuing education can be accomplished by bringing together separate initiatives.

===Members and stakeholders===

The OOC is made up of several Bay Area collectively-operated groups. We have roots in Oakland for many years and a shared vision that prioritizes people’s needs over private profit.

Members includes these eight groups, which represent 250 active participants and reach to 5,000 individuals through mailing lists and other channels, as well as other groups and individuals interested in using the space.

Stakeholders include these members as well as neighborhood residents and organizations, community beneficiaries throughout the Bay Area, donor and partner entities, and allied initiatives locally and beyond.

===Unique model and value===

The OOC models a community initiative where space and resources are mutually shared and cared for. We invite collectives and groups to join us in establishing this hub for the use and stewardship of the greater community. Every person and activity brings value to the space as a whole.

Our unique model unites social services, continuing education, co-working and project space, and civic life. We support these activities by providing designated spaces for specific activities and common spaces open for everyone.

We are intimately familiar with the needs and assets involved. Three of the founding member collectives have qualified experience providing space together at their current location. Our accomplishments range from creating an Oakland independent wi-fi to organizing a panel discussion featuring feminist scholar Silvia Federici.

===Operations===

The OOC is established as a public benefit corporation to administer a property with space and pooled resources. The OOC will hold a master lease and sublease to several member collectives.

A delegates council will represent member groups in facilitating decision making regarding the shared space. A stewardship team will oversee essential functions of administering the space, collecting fees, and paying bills.

===Project phases and costs===

Phase 1, leasing the building: the OOC leases the space, builds out the interior, strengthens community support, validates our idea and business model revenue and cost assumptions, and formalizes out operating model.

* Move-in costs of $X include first month and security deposit plus appx. $Y legal fees and $Z build-out and general improvements. We have $X in contributions from member collectives plus access to appx. in private, no-interest loans.

* Monthly operating costs of $X include monthly rent, utilities, X% of property tax, upkeep and maintenance, insurance, legal, and other bills. We expect rent fees for space us from 8 member collectives, booked events and produced events, private donations, community development grants, and no- or low-interest loans.

Phase 2, purchasing the property: Omni develops a major capital fundraising and financing strategy, evaluates a healthy and sustainable plan, secures partners and allies (e.g., land trust), and executes transaction.

* The long-term goal of purchasing the building costs of $1.95M at current market price. We will lease with option to purchase within X years, secured with a down payment of $XX.

Phase 3, owning the property: Omni changes operating structure (e.g., ownership and management roles and responsibilities), changes financial structure, and prepares for the future.

Rent is paid through a consensus process. Groups commit to paying what they can and we work together to help each other meet their commitments.
Fees and shares are determined by need and ability to pay.

Additional rent money comes from recurring, produced and booked events as well as community development grants and fundraising from dedicated friends and allies.

We have an ideal building that is perfectly suited for our effort.

A space in in Oakland, California collectively stewarded by a group of local collectives. See [[Founding Document]] for governance.

Omni Oakland Commons is comprised of several Bay Area collectives. Its express purpose is to build consensus among member collectives with minimal possible bureaucracy for the administration of a common space and sharing of resources for the use and stewardship of the greater community. Each collective puts forth a delegate to participate in the consensus process.

The delegates do not to function as any sort of governing body for the groups involved in any general sense. There are no senators. Their only and sole point is to reach consensus on the use of the space, how to pay bills, resolve any conflicts between the groups in the space, interface with the state, banks, authorities and map out the logistical dissemination of the collective work needed to maintain the space as a commons open to the surrounding community: That's it.

Come join Dirty Swan Projects and Hearts Desire Reading Series to celebrate the launch of Nico Peck's first full-length collection, THE PYRRHIAD, a queering of the story of Achilles. Stanley Lombardo has called The Pyrrhiad "an outrageous, delicate crasis of Homer and Stein and myth-worlds between and after." Meg Day adds, "Peck neither reveals nor constructs but instead bridges a multitude of worlds by allowing the liminality of transformation and translation to sound off in voices both ancient and familiar."

Nico Peck’s work has been published in the anthologies Herstory Inventory (ed. Ulrike Muller), It’s Night in San Francisco, but It’s Sunny in Oakland (Timeless Infinite Light, 2014), and Troubling the Line (Nightboat, 2012); the chapbooks The Pyrrhiad (Trafficker, 2012), I Love the Dark, the Lord of the Night (Mondo Bummer, 2013), Welter (Queer City, 2012), Bug (Paper Waster Press, 2006), and While You Were Watching (DPress, 2004); as well as the magazines EOAGH, Try, With+Stand, Dusie, Fact-Simile, Pressed Wafer, First Intensity, OMG, The Walrus, and Five Fingers Review. Peck’s visual art has shown at Frameline, ATA, SOMArts, Krowswork Gallery, The Tornado, The One, Southern Exposure, and The Brooklyn Museum. They live in San Francisco.

Monica Mody is the author of Kala Pani (1913 Press). Her poems and genre-experiments also appear in three chapbooks, and anthologies and journals including &Now Awards 2: The Best Innovative Writing, The Harper Collins Book of English Poetry, Boston Review, Eleven Eleven, PIX: A Photography Quarterly, Dusie, Postcolonial Text, Four Quarters Magazine, and Vayavya. She has been a recipient of the Sparks Prize Fellowship at the University of Notre Dame--where she completed an MFA in Creative Writing, the Zora Neale Hurston Scholarship at Naropa's Summer Writing Program, and the Toto Funds the Arts Award for Creative Writing.

Stanley F. Lombardo (born 1943) is an American professor of Classics at the University of Kansas. He is best known for his translations of the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Aeneid (published by the Hackett Publishing Company). The style of his translations is a more vernacular one, emphasizing conversational English rather than the formal tone of some older American English translations of classical verse. Lombardo designs his translations to be performed orally, as they were in ancient Greece. He also performs the poems, and has recorded them as audio books. In performance he also likes to play the drums, much like Ezra Pound.

==Text==

The Omni Oakland Collective is a group established to acquire and administer a collective property. We are presently pursuing a property known as The Omni, at 4799 Shattuck Avenue. We are committed to a radical commoning of space and resources.

The groups presently recognized as our collaborators are the Bay Area Public School, Sudo Room, Timeless Infinite Light, Livespace, Hacker Spa, Oakland Nights Live, an unnamed film-processing collective, La Commune Cafe & Bookstore, and CounterCulture Labs.

Each of these groups, will be asked to select a delegate, according to the decisionmaking processes of each group. These delegates will form the Omni Oakland Collective's Delegate Council, which will be entrusted with making binding decisions on behalf of the groups they represent. Any delegate may bring a proposal to the Delegate Council in order to vote on it. Decisionmaking by this Delegate Council will be by consensus among present delegates.

These delegates will be fully accountable to the groups they represent, and subject to recall by that group, according to the decisionmaking processes of that group.

The Delegate Council will function like a spokescouncil: delegates will attend the meetings of their groups and report back to those groups from the Delegate Council meetings, while retaining the ability to make executive decisions on behalf of their respective group.

The Delegate Council will meet weekly on Thursdays at 7pm at 2141 Broadway (except for the third Thursday), according to a schedule and location upon which it decides.

Each meeting will be preceded by a half-hour informational session, open to everyone, scheduled weekly at 6:30pm Thursdays (except for the third Thursday) at 2141 Broadway, and facilitated by selected delegates from the Omni Oakland Collective.

All collective meetings will be facilitated and will stick to an announced schedule. Each meeting will be chaired by a rotating facilitator, and should require a timekeeper and notetaker selected from among the delegates. Each meeting will begin with a formal recognition of the delegates present. Quorum for these meetings will be 2/3 rounded down. All decisions of this group will be by consensus.

Meetings will begin by laying out an agenda to which any delegate may add. Proposals may be presented at any time in the course of the meeting.

These meetings are open to the members of the groups listed above, who are invited to join the meeting in a non-voting capacity. Delegates may invite anyone, whether a group member or not, to sit in on a meeting. If it is deemed necessary, any delegate may move to close the meeting to delegates only. The meeting will then be closed based on a majority vote of present delegates.

If other organizations propose to become part of the Omni Oakland Collective, a consensus vote of the Delegate Council is required. This vote will be taken on the spot in a closed meeting of OOC delegates only, without the presence of the applicant. If such a vote passes successfully, the new group will be requested to select a delegate for the Delegate Council.

If a vote is called, any delegate may move to table that vote for one week in order to bring the matter in question back to their group, with the understanding that any vote thus tabled will be voted on, without further delay, at the next meeting of the Delegate Council. Admission of new groups to the collective of collectives must always be referred back to the individual collectives, to be voted on without delay at the next meeting of the Delegate Council.

If it is deemed necessary to expel a group, the group will be given the opportunity to present their case at a Delegate Council meeting after which the Delegate Council may decide upon expulsion by a full consensus vote in a closed meeting of OOC delegates that does not include the group in question.

The Delegate Council is empowered to amend the terms of its own existence, as outlined in this proposal, by consensus vote. We further state a continuous process of critical self-reflection is essential to the health of this project, and ask all members and groups to actively engage in this ongoing task.
