Timeless, Infinite Light will be hosting the first in a series of CONSENT Workshops in collaboration with a local community accountability group and GIRL ARMY. This workshop will be held Saturday September 13th from 1-4pm in the Omni ballroom.

Feminist Hydra presents: GIRL ARMY

The feminist hydra wants to ask ourselves and you: how do we create feminist, non-binary and queer space? Space we can actually live in?

To that end, we'll be hosting a workshop series at the Omni, starting with GIRL ARMY, a collective dedicated to peer taught, affordable, physical and psychological self-defense for women and/or trans folks in Oakland, CA.

Melisa Spence of Girl Army will offer a donation-based Self-Defense Course

In this mix of physical and verbal exercises, body language (breath/voice/stance), pressure points, escapes and strikes will be covered, as will verbal boundary-setting.

The workshop is intended to offer participants many options so that they can take what resonates for them into their lives.

We have 20 available spots (suggested donation $0-$20 sliding scale) for female-identified, non-binary, and trans-identified folks. To sign up, reply to feminist.hydra@gmail.com with your name and the best way to reach you by Friday September 5th.

If we have more than 20 sign-ups, we will choose the 20 participants by lottery, and will keep a waiting list.

FYI, two cis-men, Melisa Spence’s former students, will be participating in the workshops.

About the Feminist Hydra

The Feminist Hydra is a small group of variously identified poets, book artists, performance artists, community organizers, mothers, queers, allies, and arts educators. We are interested in developing community around empowerment, accountability and communication; and in the intersections of experimental poetics and radical politics with feminist, anti-racist, anti-classist, and ally work.

We are also tired. Tired of thinking we should say something, but that we don’t know what to say or who we can trust to say it to. Tired of watching our friends drift away from readings and arts events because they aren’t supported. Tired of muzzling ourselves, of tying ourselves up in knots, of going along to get along, of patching each other up.

We want to do our part to build a community in which we have each others’ backs.
