  • Matt - Can we get money forwarded from anonymous donor for fundraising person / activities? -- follow up with Laura.

Omni Fundraising working group meeting - Monday 26 Oct 2015

attendees

  • yar, sadie, daron, matt, libbie, robb

updates

new donors

  • libbie: talked to someone at internet archive. we should use our donor's money to pay a professional fundraiser for a while. build up trust over time.
  • matt: what she said is let's make this million a matching donation and ... fundraise on that
  • robb uses the word "capitalize" and the apologizes profusely
  • yar: what does a professional fundraiser do?
  • libbie: so much. inculddes writing business plan, framing omni in a way fundraisers can hear what it is. investors or grantwriters want to be able to explain project in a minute
  • yar: didn't we go down this road already...
  • matt: sadie's qualified as a professional fundraiser!
  • libbie: there's websites training radical activists for this
  • matt: many strategies! also having a meeting with those people
  • robb: fnb listserv talking it up. members claim to have experience throwing events for places like this
  • matt booked them for february
  • libbie:
  • andrew likes hiring someone. nervous about more diy rabbit hole
  • sadie would do a lot for $7500. standard would be $50/hour. knows a lot of people who know people on boards of foundations. could get invitations to apply for big grants. intro you to private donors we wouldn't know. we'd pay them not actually to write grants - i could help with that - but for connections. assess how muc we need from outside sources
  • usually can't get immediate money without a relationship
  • robb: let's propose this to the community at large? and ask people with experience to step forward. compile "how to fundraise for omni" doc as a model of how we want to consider fr now & in future
  • libbie: good idea, ask delegates. also that's separate from whether we want ot hire somebody
  • robb: let's see who steps forward
  • yar: i think a $7500 indiegogo could go smoothly
  • libbie: but part of it is building our relationships
  • andrew will set up an account on a film locations website

Conference Call Report-Back

TODO:

  • Still waiting on Financial Statement - Matt G says the bookkeepers are willing to put in 1 hour / day. This will take several weeks. They're willing to prioritize it if we can pay them.
  • Fiscal Sponsorship agreements from: Liberated Lens & Sudo Mesh
    • Jenny will print Sudo Mesh's agreement tommorrow & sign
    • Pinged LL 10/26 (their next meeting is tomorrow)
  • Signed sublease from FNB - just need a signature,
  • Signed sublease from MPM
    • Jenny received this reply today: "Hi, Jenny, sry we're so slow around this, it's been difficult getting everyone in the same place/on the same page. It seems like we need to incorporate somehow in order to sign the sublease because we don't want any single collective member to be liable for what happens in our space. That's a whole 'nother can o' worms, though, as we aren't really up to speed on what that entails or how to proceed in doing so, and until now really had no intention of doing that. Would it even be possible for us to incorporate and get the sublease signed by the end of the week? I dunno. What do you think our next steps should be?"
      • Jenny sent an inquiry to Jesse 10/26
  • Edit Charitable Activities response: https://pad.riseup.net/p/omniactivities
    • Via Jesse: "The items Jenny describes are what I would need to finish the application and in particular the financial statements. I looked at the draft of the activities and it is going in the right direction. For line 5 I will take that information and provide some suggested language. I will also suggest some revisions of what you've written when I send you the final application."

  • Edit Charitable Activities response
