Announcements

  • Ken: I went to the BID meeting and I'm sorta quasi being Omni's rep there. Two things happened that could affect us. Posting laminated flyers saying "do not feed the thieves" and we can put them up if we want. 2. Anyone who had their cars broken into at 48th st: the construction site has cameras and we can get the photage through BID if it will help.
  • Marc: Sudoroom has started 5 min of Fame Event. First Wednesday of each month.
  • Patrik: Just had a little meeting with David and Joe and Ken about the kitchen in the basement. If you are interested in helping get it up to code and maybe improved. Talk to us (Patrik, Joe or David).
  • Robb: Building will meet every: 1st and 3rd mondays at 7 pm
  • Laura: We need to have people with relevant expertise walk around and make a list of everything that needs fixing on the building.
  • Patrik
  • June 11th - Temescal Street Fair (via Ken) - can have the stretch of 48th St between Telegraph & Shattuck for Omni Collectives. Mushroom Society is doing 'Make Your Own Mushrooms' kits and CCL is also contributing

Bans

  • Shawn F is definitely banned as he just attacked Robb in the front hall

Add to list of people asked to leave

Working Group Report-Backs

  • Patrik: Just had a little meeting with David and Joe and Ken about the kitchen in the basement. If you are interested in helping get it up to code and maybe improved. Talk to us (Patrik, Joe or David).
  • Laura: We need to have people with relevant expertise walk around and make a list of everything that needs fixing on the building.
  • Patrik: We still needconstantly help fighting against rodents!

Building & permits

Meetings: N/A atm - but we really need them!

  • Robb: Building will meet every: 1st and 3rd mondays at 7 pm

Commons

Meetings: Second and Fourth Thursdays at 6pm

Communications

  • We could use help putting out a monthly newsletter! Join the comms working group mailing list at https://omnicommons.org/lists/listinfo/comms
  • It would be bi-monthly probably. Next one will go out tomorrow. Sent emails out to collectives to update group on what happened and no-one responded. What if we put in a two sentence intro in the intros for the delegates meeting with the most interesting things that has happened since last.
  • Maryann: We need more notice than one week.
  • Marcus: MANY notices at various times before. 2 wk, 1wk, 3 days and day before deadline

Laura: should we add a slot to delegates meeting, to report events from collectives, to include in newsletter? Does anyone oppose this? [no opposition stated]

Julian: Should we have a phone tree?

Laura: We started a Slack for Omni. Talk to Laura to get on it.

Finance

Meetings: Currently conjoined with Fundraising (Mondays at 6pm)

  • Most relevant data is in the 'Budget' spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rvkMc5lmd8PovoViNLdvlrv0tSyvrH7iB0SmGqaFec8/edit#gid=1501592721
  • Our monthly expenses continue to be over $15K/month until July due to loan repayments.
  • Jenny: We still have about $15 to $20k average expenses every month until July because we are repaying many of the community loans from last year (we were on average ~$5k short on building expenses last year). After July it should go down to $10-11k per month. We also have past due bills to our lawyer (we're repaying this on a payment plan). We have around ~$31k on the account so we can deal. We're making ~$10.5k a month. If you want to work on grant writing talk to Maryann.
    • Laura: We still need money for events.
    • Jenny: We especially need help with being there for events to help with setup/teardown etc. Joe has been doing a lot and so has Julio but we get about 10 requests per week.
  • Laura: Last week the disaster relief fund for ghost ship fire residents was discussed at this meeting. At the finance working group we discussed an alternate way of doing it which would involve less work. What's the update on that?
    • Jenny: We're waiting to hear back from the fundraisers to see if the donaters are willing to waive the tax-deductability but there were over 500 donors so getting that from all of them would be difficult.
  • Patrik: We had requested to lower CCL's rent to $2k. Any update on that?
    • Jenny: Finance is empowered to make decisions on that and they approved it.

Fundraising

Meetings: Mondays at 6:00pm

  • Jenny: We have a Patreon page: http://patreon.com/omnicommons and could really use some more contributors! Could really use someone to work on the Patreon, publish blog posts etc
    • Mary Ann, Marcus, new guy interested
  • CCL signed up for Amazon Smile: http://smile.amazon.com <-- BOOOO

also signed up for Zazzle to sell merch: https://www.zazzle.com/s/counter+culture+labs

  • Marcus: What about going out and standing in front of places and talking about the Omni or going door to door to advertise the Patreon program and Omni.
    • opportunity at Temescal Street Fair June 11 between Telegraph & Shattuck on 48th St

ABDC Additional Space Proposal

  • Full Proposal available here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1l9Em9NULIyGa7i7nTFaKmT3av38w68lRzcxXmYpeQv0/edit?usp=sharing
  • We apologize we are just submitting this proposal today and understand it cannot be voted on tonight, but we still look forward to going over the propposal in person and hearing feedback.
  • Dasha: We're proposing to build space in the front space of the Omni that's twice the size of the ticket booth and also keep the ticket booth. They want to expand their membership.
    • place in SF is closing in September(?)

Discussion

  • Helen: Would this be enclosed, walled off from the rest of the room?
    • Marcus: 4 foot high walls, so people can see in and people inside can see out. Considering the cafe crowd, having flow/interaction there
    • Dasha: Thinking of storefront/display where we show our work
    • Marcus: Two racks with clothing/tshirts/hats etc for collective shirts/swag
  • Joe: How long is the 48th St wall?
    • Marcus: About half the length of the room. Lines up with the posts I think
      • Patrik: Guesstimate around 600 sqft
  • Helen: What hours would you keep and how noisy is the operation?
    • Dasha: Not noisy at all. Members have 24/7 access.
  • Robb: Will activities create smells etc?
    • Dasha: We use nontoxic paints. Scent is very low even in ticket booth room when printing is going on.
    • Marcus: You have to get super upclose to smell it
      • Robb: Have smelled something really noxious before
        • Marcus: Is a solvent used when washing out the screens which is what smells
  • Maureen: Will there be unaccompanied minors?
    • Marcus: Don't think so - there's always been at least one 18+ y/o
      • Maureen: Internship program for youth. Will parents be there?
        • Dasha: Will always be a guardian there
          • Laura: If there's reasonable supervision according to insurance agent should be fine
            • Patrik & Maureen: Not what we've heard from every other insurance company. Would have to background check everybody
              • Maureen: When you do these kind of things, no supervision / background checks etc the rates of sexual abuse go through the roof, what an insurance agent told me
                • Marcus: We're not going to casually start this youth program - will research thoroughly, get the permits we need, etc
  • Robb: Before we started the construction in that room, we had a stage out there and regular events
    • Laura: Should talk to ABDC about whether there's a way to have both in the space
      • Robb: If this is the floorplan, then I don't think it'll be possible
  • Marc: What does it take to join ABDC?
    • Dasha: People fill out a solidarity form re: their views/ideology that's approved.
      • Marc: So it's for-profit?
        • Dasha: Is a coop.
          • Laura & Jenny: It's currently a fiscally-sponsored project of the Omni
  • Ken: Modular building is better,
    • Laura: clarifying questions only plz
  • Patrik: Just eyeballing, looks about 600sqft
  • Joe: Is it pretty much agreed that we're reserving the rest of the entry hall for the cafe? Is that the long-range consensus that we want a cafe in there? Don't think the walls are great if there's going to be a cafe
  • Ken: I just want to make sure when you build a wall. If you don't mind making it totally modular so you take it down and put it up you also avoid building permits.
  • Jenny: We'd need clarification if you're going to have employees, sales etc. because that complicates matters of being a sponsored project. But there are ways to deal with that.

What's exciting about this proposal?

  • Julian: Stuff happening in that space!
  • Maureen: More art in the space
  • Patrik: Having people there in the front to answer the door, greet people, etc
  • Jenny: ABDC makes spaces really beautiful. Just go into and check out the ticket booth room!

Concerns people have:

  • Marc: $50/quarter/member w/ 15 members - that's $250/mo. How are you going to make $800/mo rent?
    • Marcus: SF rate is different. Need to figure out if the SF members that move here will be paying the same rate. Believe Kazoo's been making up the gap in payments to Omni.
  • Robb: My only concern is that we rely very heavily on Commons / Booking income, and before the construction Entrance Hall was booked almost equally to the ballroom. If we have lighting and a stage out there, is a viable source of revenue for the Omni. We also have the Disco Room, but only pulls like $15-20/hr from that space. Robb is going to look back and see how much we used to make. Jenny is going to send Robb the spreadsheet.
    • Dasha: Re: Raising the $$ for rent - just launched a new website, hoping to get new members. Kazoo's been making the difference, just got 2 new members
  • Patrik: Some sort of estimate on how much
  • Maureen: Proposed rent increase is too low for where it is. Agrees with Robb that basement might be a good place instead.
    • Marcus: Kazoo also thinks the basement is better but for other members it's been the very last choice? Don't think it would completely off the tablet.
  • Laura: Would it be legal to have a cafe and a print shop in the same area.
  • Maryann: Why do you want two separate spaces
    • Dasha: We really want more of a gallery space with more exposure. They feel tucked away in the current room.
      • Jenny: Phat beets doesn't really need outward exposure so maybe a swap?
    • Maureen: If you were in the basement maybe we can have a display area in the front area.
  • Laura: You will have to discuss what came up here and come back if you want to modify the proposal.
    • Marcus: You can make comments directly in the google doc.
  • DK: If ABDC is willing, I would like to work with them to see what would be required with respect to code of having a potential cafe & screenprinting in same space.

CCL issue

Do we like nyan cat?

Wonderment Project

  • Bay Area Bands Together looking for spaces to hold benefit shows. All profits would go entirely toward putting on the next show, intended to raise money for different orgs, collectives, etc such as Omni. No profit to the bands, just an opportunity to raise money for Omni. Cuz we give a shit.
  • Mary Ann: How do you support yourselves?
    • More important right now at this point in history to be a part of something, get exposure, networking & community
