Discussion

Kathy: Cleanliness

  • Max is working toward cleaning up Phat Beets office
  • When women use the bathrooms, they need to squat. Not something a women should have to endure. Don't want to have to put up with it anymore, doesn't think she should have to clean up after others.
  • all of the bathrooms are insufficiently clean, also surfaces.
  • Email was sent out that offensive to Cathy, directly referencing her.
    • if a person is attributed to making a statement in an email, that person attributed should be cited
  • have repeatedly asked that people stop smoking so close to the entrance
  • we should be conscious about how people are described in emails may cast them in positive or negative light, and, consequently, be at risk of relying upon and reiterating racist stereotypes
  • we should also be careful about making assumptions about who is responsible for a given mess without being certain
  • probably many of the people in the current room are folks that
  • what are some practices that could promote cleanliness
    • signage to remind people to clean after people
    • remind collectives to ask their members to clean up after themselves
    • we could have regular cleaning days, asking cleaning delegates
      • marcus: hey, you know how bitcoin rewards it's miners for all the work they do, omni should do that by creating like an omni coin or something, which is a share of omni's monthly income. this would then go to the people who actively clean and do other very real important shit for omni... each month paid out
        • marcus: people don't like to clean, very rarely do people voluntarily clean, they should get paid to do so. watch how quickly the cleaniness situation changes.
  • Phat Beats is considering not renting here because of the insufficient cleanliness
  • we don't know who specifically is leaving the messes
  • Julian: Actually having a regular day, and making it a requirement of collectives, is a good idea. No amount of signage is going to significantly change peoples habits.
    • Robb: Issue wrt those collectives with very low membership, could be a burden. Seems unbalanced if a collective doesn't have a large membership
  • Almaz: Agree with Cathy - is this the culture that people don't flush the toilet? I didn't grow up like that. People leave their cups and don't rinse them. Lots of fruit flies. Not the first time we've discussed this. Support what Julian's saying - bring collectives in to clean, punish them if they don't show up. Tried having a regular cleaning party... Sent email to everybody but only the same people who always clean showed up.
  • Laura: When I was on the Commons WG it was made clear that a task of the point person was to ensure the room was clean before the event, and ensure it was left that way.
    • this practice is inconsistently maintained. we should make sure that abnormal commons point person know what the practice, that person should be accountable for the cleanliness.
  • it's hard to make things look entirely clean, surface & floorwise, because of the filth deep in some of them
    • this is not the precise issue being raised,
  • could one restroom be exclusively for women; it potentially becomes an issue for disabled folks
    • almaz - also a cultural issue with regard to multiple genders
  • phil: one problem could be the number of events and the size. do people that come here understand that there are no professional clean up crews?
  • mary ann: one of the men in our group had the same complaint, said he had to clean all the bathrooms before our last event.
    • laura: if it's a member collective's own event, they don't have a point person and clean both before and after their event
  • robb: there are some mentally unstable people here who do trash the bathrooms on occasion.. not so much lately
  • Julian: there are real gendered difference in terms of the habits of cleanliness; we should in some fashion confront the politics of this
  • Laura: smoking - go down by the parking lot?
  • Almaz: Also comes in to the classroom sometimes [shattuck side]
    • also supportive of a women's bathroom. sometimes events request gendered bathrooms
  • laura: how about this? we make one bathroom cis men only :D
  • robb: we need to remind the recurring events point people to remind their event folx to clean up after themselves
  • robb: another option is we could just actually pay people
    • word! ie: agreed
      • we make like 20% of total monthly income go to the cleaning fund. members here at omni who timesheet in tht they're cleaning "this space" over "this time" get access to that fund.
        • this fund means that the money stays within the omni collective of folks, not leaving it to an outside cleaning service.

action items

  • jenny on no smoking and bathroom cleaning signage
  • cathy will write women's bathroom proposal
  • schedule a regular cleaning day
  • laura will call around and get quotes on cleaning services
  • laura to meet greg from fnb and remind him about sanitary food storage
  • kathy suggests we should discuss next time how to prepare for the new bourgies in the neighborhood, in part by connect with the neighbor's on side
  • Jenny will make sure GCEA is on the omni website
