Notes:
Community potluck - Thursday, August 21, 6 - 8 pm in the ballroom!
In order for the potluck to be successful, we need all collectives to participate by sending at least one (preferably more) representative to talk about what you do. Please respond to this email if you're willing to talk for <2 minutes at 6:30 pm about your collective and to stick around to answer questions and meet people.
We will also need volunteers to help set up before the potluck begins! Please let me know if you're available to come between 4 and 6 pm on Thursday to help make the ballroom as beautiful and welcoming as possible.
Potluck Schedule of Events:
4:00 - 6:00 pm: Omni volunteers help clean and set up the ballroom.
6:00 - 6:30 pm: People arrive, get food, mingle
6:30 - 6:45 pm: Representatives from each collective give a short introduction of their group and the Omni.
6:45 - 7:45 pm: People talk at their tables, using the discussion questions placed at each table as a starting place for conversation.
7:45 - 8:00 pm: Quick report-back from tables. Thank people for attending.
To Do Before Thursday - Please sign up for tasks that appeal to you!
1. Publicity/outreach: - We've handed out all the flyers we had printed (200 of them!). If anyone feels inspired to print more and hand them out to friends in the neighborhood, please feel free. The flyer template is attached.
- Facebook invitation - Can someone with access to the Omni Oakland Collective FB page please make an event with the info on the flyer? Also, each collective should feel free to announce and publicize the potluck on your group's FB pages, websites, etc.
- Reaching out to like-minded groups and organizations:
- Temescal Neighborhood Association: Scott reached out.
- Critical Resistance: Sarah reached out.
- Phat Beets: Sarah reached out.
- Temescal Library: Sarah reached out.
- InkWorks Print Shop: Sarah reached out.
- Causa Justa: Does someone have a connection they could invite?
- Others??? Please invite groups and organizations you think would be interested in learning more about the Omni!
2. Finalize discussion questions to help start conversation among Omni and community members. Below are the questions we came up with today. Please send me your edits before Wednesday, and I will print several copies to bring to the potluck!
- What do you like about North Oakland?
- What concerns do you have about the neighborhood?
- What are your needs from a community space like the Omni? Is there anything you would be excited to offer?
- Several of the groups at the Omni offer free classes to the public. What kinds of classes would you be interested in taking or teaching?
3. Create a flyer that describes the Omni in language that is succinct and accessible. Does someone with a knack for language want to tackle this?
4. Everyone - make food to contribute!
Conflict resolution and safer space policies
- The CDC has spent a lot of time working on both policies and they still don't feel complete. Let's involve the greater Omni in helping to create policies that we all want!
- We will propose that the delegate meeting on Thursday, August 28 be devoted to discussing the safer space and conflict resolution policies.
