Agenda:

  • Encouraging self-care
  • Reaching out to other groups and organizations in Oakland
  • Future events facilitated by the CDC
  • Financial transparency

Financial transparency

  • We are concerned that a culture of shame or fear inhibits our ability to talk about money at the Omni. Financial transparency between collectives is necessary in order to demystify the Omni's finances and articulate the sliding scale used to determine rent and shared expenses.
  • How can we encourage financial transparency between collectives and in regard to the Omni's overall financial health?
  • We want to encourage more regular report-backs from the Finances working group so the delegates can make more informed decisions regarding spending the Omni's money.
  • In 2 weeks (at the November 13 delegates meeting) the Finances working group will present a detailed report on the Omni's finances - how we've spent our money, where it comes from, etc. The following week, (November 20) we will encourage each member collective to deliver a mini-report on their finances. The CDC will provide a list of prompts for collectives to prepare their presentation. During that meeting, we will also facilitate a break-out discussion on Omni finances generally.
  • We also discussed starting to record the number of volunteer hours everyone spends on the Omni each week. This could help in writing grant proposals in the future and making visible the amount of labor that many people are currently giving to the project.

Action items

  • Reach out to other collective projects (InkWorks Press, Arizmendi, etc) for guidance on talking about money.
  • Compile a list of questions to distribute to collectives for their mini-report on finances.
