Building WG July 20, 2015

Attendees

  • yar, Jenny, anka, laura, joe, remote-matt, robb, jessie

Project Updates

Fire Extinguishers

  • John certified and installed all our extinguishers!
  • May need to check with our general liability insurance to find out if we need a K-Class extinguisher in the upstairs kitchen.

Doors

Epic door party happened on Friday! Demystified all the doors

disco room fire exit

bottom hinge has been replaced, and now it closes smoothly! Prob done

basement to ballroom door

successfully installed closer, now only still needs a panic bar

sudo/ccl hallway door

  • frame has been prepared, door just needs to be rehung. need to chisel hinge sockets and screw it in

ballroom to shattuck (inner double doors)

  • just had to plug old screwhools with wood and glue for new screwholes
  • now can be rehung

basement to la commune

  • just had to plug old screwhools with wood and glue for new screwholes
  • now can be rehung

ballroom to shattuck (outer double doors)

  • didn't touch these at the door party
  • they don't need closers since the inner doors have closers
  • do need panic bar, but that will be a PITA
  • some people think it'll be fine, just cut the carpet out a little bit
  • discussion of asking Hol's advice about how to cut a panic bar to size

ballroom to LC double doors

  • they've been taken off
  • do they need to be up again for Digital Detox? No. They just need to be put out of the way.
  • Should ask Klaus his opinion on keeping these doors as they are
    • Woah, good idea. He might have a clever alternative...
    • tbc: all for moving the doorway if experts decide that it needs done.
  • yar called it "intersection of doom" but jessie says don't sweat, just leave them where they are for now. moving them is a wishlist item.
  • last year's official fire pre-inspection didn't specifically mention this area, so presumably the city won't require us to fix it
  • anka's especially concerned about the kids' room egress being blocked
  • joe: stairway's also important for egress. also suggests new doors - 2 36" doors
  • jessie suggested the same thing (new doors) but thinks that stairwell should be "not a fire exit"
    • Another ask for Klaus (2 additional egress paths from upstairs, disco room & west stairwell)
  • yar: fear that moving the ballroom doors in will change the ballroom size, require a building permit, and we'll lose our grandfathered permits
  • Matt: I'm willing to help work on fixing the old doors, I think we could reinforce any weakness they have using a brute-force method.

panic hardware

front door

  • jack sent us a mockup + prices of all materials (~$1129)
  • can we recognize faces through the glass? from far away (up in the kitchen, etc) mention that to armel
  • also need kicker - $976
  • jake will take care of electronic opener stuff
  • do we need to get jake & jack together?
  • yar: talked to jack on friday. he doesn't care about the electronic stuff, just needs to know the shape and size of the door. he's waiting for us to say with certainty that we know what hardware we're using and we're confident about what shape & size we want. maybe a conversation would give everyone more confidence but maybe not necessary either.
  • ask david k if jim has the door redo without the cloud
  • joe went downtown and found out the front door & south wall permit has SIX inspections, plus another THREE for electrical.

South Wall

Electrical

Everything is resolved? The Plan:

  • We will install 4 circuits!
    • 20 amp - Outlets along balcony banister, romex run under mezzanine floor through cross-beams, ~10 x 2-outlet boxes mounted on a short pipe of conduit.
    • 15 amp - Emergency exit sign and staircase lights in SE corner, romex run under mezzanine floor through cross-beams to surface-mounted conduit as needed.
    • 15-30 amp - "Any Future Lights", 12-3 romex run in or above sound (S) wall, junction box at every beam/post (supports for trusses), with a piece of conduit run up along the beam/post to the top of the wall if necessary (for ease of access for lights later), and nail-protectors for the 2x4 beams.
    • 15-30 amp - "Any Future Ballroom Installations", same 12-3 romex as "Any Future Lights" allowing for 2 circuits.
  • Rob wants to put infinity boxes with one-way mirrors on the pillars. makes LED strips appear like infinite light
    • laura: can we do that later if we have those boxes in there?
    • rob: no, it has to be before drywall. recessed in behind it.
    • laura: but we have those boxes...
    • rob: i guess we could just cut the drywall, yeah
    • joe: boxes need blueboard and quiet putty
  • Figure out when Matt, Enoch, Rob & Whitney are available for wiring
    • Thursday after 5pm is the plan :)
    • Whitney is going to hold down getting it done given he has experience and perhaps less trepidation.
      • If we have our ducks in a row, it will be easier to just get down to work and finish the job all together.
    • Matt's planning on going to Home Depot to exchange 12-2 Romex with 12-3 Romex!!!

^^ Digital Detox people are setting up in the ballroom starting at 10am on Thursday. Hopefully will be done by 5pm.

      • Will they be using the mezzanine area? Will they be around after 5pm?
        • yes, but laura will see if they'll be donehu
        • Hrm, shit, well I want to go to the delegate's meeting... so maybe if possible we'll get started at 5pm, and end early (by 7pm) with an idea of what we have to finish, say on Saturday? Enoch was going to be less free after Thurs I believe

Sound Wall

  • since we have extra inspections, can we go ahead and drywall now?
  • Joe & Jenny are gone in August. Jerome, Jessie, Matt & Rob know how to drywall
  • can't cover up until boxes are wired behind it
  • can get rough electrical and insulation inspections next
  • already had one inspection. needs another inspection AFTER electrical and BEFORE drywall.

other areas

  • what about the edges above the stairs? do we need to do the tyvek & veneer stuff?
  • joe: we were gonna wait and see how the sound wall works
  • rob: i guess we forgot about that
  • also near opal & in the broom closet
  • joe wants to wait and save energy. rob's happy doing it. we have the materials.

Storage Room Tools

  • Almost all the power tools are organized in the trunk
  • All of the hand tools need to be placed on the pegboard

Cafe Bathroom

  • floor has been painted (finally)
  • ready to remount toilet - we already have the wax ring. There's probably caulk around
  • joe: tiling is a mess
  • laura: cant have 90 degree angle bet floor and wall - use plastic molding instead of tile?
  • yar: still a danger that the city'll ask us to tear up the drywall, the concrete to show the pipes etc. question of how far do we go - do we finish it all?
    • joe: let's finish it, and take pictures of the headers before we cover them
    • yar: still some last-ditch due diligence, go in and inquire about the status of the permit
    • before going downtown we'll check in with DK just to get the full history of documents submitted thus far

basement

  • black hole's pile of stuff is a fire hazard. needs to go somewhere. don't know how to get in touch with BH.

fried children

  • rob put plate covers on the outlets in the kids' room, so they won't get fried

MPM

  • half their flourescent bulbs are out. they're not happy. do we have 8-foot bulbs?

Action Items

  • Ask Hol is he has experience installing panic bars and can come help out [Jenny]
  • ask Klaus above questions - laura
  • ask DK to tell the tale of the ada bathroom, including permit appg # [jenny]
    • copy of plans w/ cloud removed
  • proposal to omni delegates to move black hole's shit out of the way
  • look at all the tiny task lists in every room
  • joe will get a plan for cove-molding the bathroom floor
  • yar will mount toilet and help hang doors
  • rob will tyvek the south wall corners
  • anka will do more tiny tasks
