Building Bloc

  • Meeting 1
  • Oct 26, 2015 - 4-5pm
  • Attendees: Yar, Matt, Libbie, daron

questions

  • Questions to Generate Ideas
    • 1. What problems at the Omni can Building Bloc address?
    • 2. What will Building Bloc build a purpose/identity around?
    • 3. How does become a member of the Building Bloc?
    • 4. What should Building Bloc be (re)named?

What are our ideas about building bloc?

  • libbie: can provide orientation to space, omni processes, give tours, help run working times, can work on consturction projects (not specific to bb, maybe not true), can be a space where other collectives gather. introductory space. members of different collectives.
  • yar: i was thinking of something limited at first. important not to require work from the members at the start, want to feel a sense of ownership and reciprocity from the community. this will enable people to do things rather than require to people to do things. a quick path to feeling a sense of ownership over the project.
  • libbie: do you want there to be a process for membership?
  • yar: not sure. do we wanna screen people?
  • libbie: let's model an ideal membership process. have to participate in discussion about what omni is about? including looking over statement of solidarity and how that relates to peoples' interest in project. it's literally a membership process
  • darin: what should it revolve around?
  • libbie: itself and the Omni
  • yar: yes it'is about omni and omni membership, but i don't want it to just be . what we have in common is that we believe in the potential of the omni and we want to work on potential here.
  • libbie: well look at us. you feel grounded in sudoroom, but a lot of us don't have a collective but love omni. let's ask those folks.
  • darin's joining sudoroom
  • matt: libbie, would you join bb?
  • libbie: only for fulfilling functions omni needs
  • matt: what would incentivize you to join bb?
  • libbie: parties & potlucks. food & dance.
  • matt: what would you want to bring & share w/rest of collective?
  • libbie: intentionality about bringing place-based connection between humans. being connected to 4799 shattuck meaning the blocks surrounding us. families, neighborhood. being place-based.
  • matt: not just in omni but neighborhood. really helpful.
  • libbie's leaving, won't be a member
  • yar: should we have remote members
  • matt: sudo has members in colorado
  • libbie's confounded by yar
  • yar: maybe other people will want to make other collectives in the future with differnet vibes but same function
  • libbie: would be a good starting point to focus on offering how-tos. how to get involved with omni? how to start a collective? that'd be the point of bb. popular education @ omni. if we want to get ambitious, not just solving omni probs, people at this coop conf this afternoon talked about increasing peoples literacy about collectives, co-ops, horizontal organizing, etc
  • yar: how will power be distributed? what if new people come next week and have different ideas?
  • darin: we need more collaborative brains
  • matt: yeah people don't want labor extracted from them.
  • libbie: but we don't have any coercive power
  • yar: we can prevent people from coming
  • matt: why would i want to join a group, just because it's the only one? general purpose? what is someone relating to and getting out of it?
  • libbie: why do people come to omni at all? if not political alignment, seeing potential for omni? set aside people who already want to join an existing collective. but what are other draws?
  • matt: tangent
  • daron: there was no email for this meeting? ben & maggie interested.
  • yar: who wants to be a member of building bloc? [yar, daron & libbie raise hands] okay, so the 3 of us are the founding members of building bloc. woo!
  • daron wants pizza parties
  • matt: goal is also to be member collective of omni commons. so require that other collectives are interested & consenting. how do you contribute?
  • yar: right what have ben & libbie ever done for the omni
  • libbie: i'm sending all the money home lol
  • daron: people ought to get emails
  • libbie: we should look over application process and fulfill all those things
  • we all consent to the 3 of us being founding members
  • matt: how do i become a member?
  • yar: if the 3 members consent to adding you as a member
  • matt: so the default is consensus?
  • yar: proposal to the membership - do we default to consensus for all decisions?
  • yar & libbie consent, daron doesn't know what that means
  • matt: usually you vote
  • yar: the V word!!!
  • matt: like with prop 8 people vote. but with consensus people are trying to figure out each others' needs.
  • explaining the spiral
  • discussion of religion - illuminati, JZ, freemasons
  • daron is now in favor of consensus process - it passes!
  • yar: what happens if one of us doesn't show up to the next meeting? how do we add new members?
  • libbie defaults to abstaining when she's not at a meeting
  • yar: so should everyone default to abstaining when they're not at a meeting?
  • libbie: unless they're remoting
  • yar: i think remote participation is the same as being there
  • matt: convivial learning
  • yar: do meetings need quorum to make decisions?
  • libbie: you have 2/3rds
  • yar: what's the minimum number of people to make a meeting? is it 2?
  • libbie: sure
  • yar: so daron and i will be at next meeting. when is it?
  • matt wants to support bb existing but afraid of being involved in too many things, for my own personal health and taking up too much space. daron supports this.
  • let's meet next week, monday november 2 4pm. libbie will still be here!
  • daron: if people donate first they'll be invited to a potluck. we can invite them to a party.
  • talking about libbie's brochure. guess we're the fundrainsing wg now
